CDC: Bathroom injuries at tub, shower, and toilet

Gambar
Danger lurks in the bathroom: Slips and falls in the shower and bathtub made… (Myun Chung / Los Angeles…) Keeping up with hygiene is a good idea, but watch your step. The bathroom is full of ways to hurt yourself — and a new report estimates that nearly a quarter of a million Americans age 15 or older can back that up. Bathing and showering appear to be particularly dangerous. Overall, about two-thirds of accidental injuries happen in the bathtub or shower — which makes sense, because each can become slippery. But many injuries involve the toilet: standing up, sitting down, or using it. (Yes, about 9% of the total injuries were from overexertion.) Overall, mishaps near the bathtub, shower, toilet and sink caused an estimated 234,094 nonfatal injuries in the U.S. in 2008 among people at least 15 years old, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported online Thursday in its weekly Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report . And the injury rate rises with age. Researchers us

Pudding Painting Messy Toddler Activity

Gambar
Pudding Painting: a delicious toddler sensory activity. There is nothing classier than inviting your friends over to pudding paint on a shower curtain . We really knows how to host an event around here. Martha Stewart better take notes… This was one of those uber-sophisticated parties that you just really hope to be invited to. Two of my toddler’s besties came for this party and it did not disappoint. PUDDING PAINTING : A delicious and fun toddler activity" height="600" width="400" /> Pudding painting was a snap to set up. What I loved about this activity was how silly it was. It was so random, it was so fun. Letting kids paint with pudding? What kind of crazy moms are we? I should also mention up front that the toddlers did a great job showing restraint and not eating much pudding. Color me surprised. The Moms however…well, we definitely sampled our fair share of pudding paint. Here’s how Pudding Painting went down. Materials: (this list contains affilia

A modern, New York spa-themed baby shower | Baby Showers

Aug 7 A modern, New York spa-themed baby shower Categories   Baby Showers Love the feeling of this simple, chic baby shower thrown by Little Miss Party at the hostess Stephanie’s beautiful Chelsea loft . Loft in Chelsea automatically means awesomeness , right? LMP turned the space into a really spacious venue, and Raquel Bianca captured the afternoon beautifully. Peonies, jars… done. Pretty poofs and lanterns from Luna Bazaar made things totally manageable in the decor department. Such a cute cake and topper! To pamper Afaaf, the mama-to-be, Little Miss Party set up a mini-spa with My Spa 2 Go, where guests could get express pedicures, and take home bath salts . How adorable is she?! Congratulations, mama! Beautiful shower , everyone involved. A Baby Shower {Recipe: Special Stuffed Mushrooms}

Many of you know the very generous and talented Amanda from I Am Baker and I Am Mommy. Amanda has become a dear friend over the past year. Even though we have never met in person, we “chat” almost everyday with a group of other wonderful blogging friends . Amanda has provided support, friendship, laughter and love to our gaggle of friends. Now, it is our turn to shower her with some love! Amanda is expecting a sweet baby boy in the next couple of days – her 4th kiddo! We have come together as a virtual group, since we can’t all meet in person, to throw a baby shower for her. It won’t be the same as getting to pat her little belly or “oooohhhh and ahhhhhh” over tiny little baby diapers and clothes, but hopefully Amanda will feel our hugs and love through the internet waves. We can’t wait to “meet” I Am Baby Boy Baker and hope that you’ll visit the other shower participants to see what everyone is cooking up to welcome him into the world! (Make sure to scroll to the bottom for my con

Does the bathtub have a shower with shower...

U enter the bathroom where the sink and toilet is, then you pass a door to enter a shower room where there is a shower head next to the bathtub(you can do hand wash laundry too!) but is long enough for you to shower in the bathtub. There is no curtain between the bathtub and the shower area. But there is a segregation between toilet and shower/bath area.

5 Unexpected Ways to Use Epsom Salts (They're Not Just for Baths!)

I'm not an athlete, I'm not a bath person, and I'm not an 82-year-old, so I've never really felt the need for Epsom salts in my life. But it turns out there are a ton of other ways to use them beyond the standard sore- muscle bath soak . So if you're in need of a little R & R in this post-Christmas-pre-New-Year's (but still stuck in your hometown) lull, here are five at-home treatments you can make using the Epsom salts lurking in the medicine cabinet at your parents' house. (Or you could go out and buy some—we like Dr. Teal's Rosemary Mint Epsom Salt Soaking Solution . ) Sunburn reliever. If you're lucky enough to be spending the holidays somewhere sunny, hopefully you listened to that motherly/ Allure voice in your head and wore tons of SPF 50. But in case you did somehow get a sunburn, Epsom salts can help inflamed skin. "I mix a couple of spoonfuls into a cup of water and use a spray bottle to mist it onto the affected area," say

The Voices of Psoriasis

The faces and voices of psoriasis. (Photography credits: David Walter Banks , Meenu Bhardwaj, Ken Cedeno, Ryan Collerd, David Eulitt and Shana Sureck for The New York Times) Many chronic diseases are invisible, taking a toll on the individual but not immediately apparent to outsiders. But the skin condition psoriasis causes obvious changes leading to itchy, scaly skin on the hands, legs, scalp and other body parts. Not only is it painful, but it can also be isolating, because sufferers are embarrassed by their appearance. Today’s Patient Voices by Karen Barrow focuses on seven men, women and children with psoriasis, a chronic disease of the immune system that appears on the skin, usually as thick, red, scaly patches. Many people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis . According to the National Institutes of Health, as many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis. You’ ll meet Christine Morris of Limerick, Pa., who talks about mothering a child with psoriasis. Her 5-year-ol

Improving bathtub/shower combo.

Gambar
Cheryl Levine February 25, 2016 Shower isn't getting use because it is a combo. bath tub/shower with a curtain that makes the tub uncomfortable to use. Have tried the curved shower curtain , didn't work. The tub isn't a soaking tub/is on the small-ish inside, but I hesitate to remove it because it is the only tub in the house. Also do not want to invest in changing out tubs - would rather make current tub/shower combo more serviceable. Could you advise on what you would do? One thought is to install glass doors , ideally in a way that a child could still be bathed in the tub with parental help. Is this possible? How would you envision doing this? Bookmark Like

This Bath Oil Will Knock You Out

After a long day of writing emails, replying to emails, forwarding emails, and whatever else constitutes modern working life , you need a bath. But not just any Mr. Bubble situation, oh no. You need Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath and Shower Oil. It seems crazy expensive at first ($73!!), but that little bottle will last you a year or more, depending on your dedication to The Bath. You only need the smallest capful each time, because the oil is more concentrated than a law school student on the eleventh hour of a midterm Adderall bender . But the most important thing is the scent and your body’s reaction to it. It’s a perfectly balanced combination of approximately one thousand essential oils . I tried to recreate it with oils once and ended up with a bath that smelled like expired mud. Major players are chamomile ( sleepytime tea action ), vetiver (think green, running through a French garden in the nude), and sandalwood (sex — on flannel sheets — in a cabin). No single ess

50 Shades of Gluten (Intolerance)

Gambar
Comstock Images/Stockbyte/Thinkstock This article was first featured at The Huffington Post. Click here to see the original article. Celiac disease (CD) was initially described in the first century A.D. by a Greek physician named Aretaeus of Cappadocia. (1) But neither Aretaeus nor anyone else knew that CD is caused by an autoimmune reaction to gluten, a protein in wheat. That didn’t become clear until 1950 — several centuries later — when Dr. Willem Dicke, a Dutch pediatrician, conclusively proved that gluten was the culprit. (2) Dicke’s discovery saved millions of children and adults from the perils of untreated celiac disease , including malnutrition, stunted growth, cancer, severe neurological and psychiatric illness and even death. Since then, the mainstream view of gluten intolerance has been relatively black or white: Either you have celiac disease, in which case even a small amount of gluten will send you running to the bathroom in three seconds flat, or you don’t, and you ca
