Visiting Dolly Parton’s dinner show Dixie Stampede.

Lee led to the death of an innocent woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, I watched him oink and squeal in a race for the fate of the country. Lee, this time, was a piglet—part of Dolly Parton ’s Dixie Stampede, a Medieval Times–style dine-in attraction where seven nights a week and at occasional weekend matinees , the South rises again. Advertised as an “extraordinary dinner show … pitting North against South in a friendly and fun rivalry,” Dolly Parton ’s Dixie Stampede is the Lost Cause of the Confederacy meets Cirque du Soleil . It’s a lily- white kitsch extravaganza that play-acts the Civil War but never once mentions slavery. Instead, it romanticizes the old South, with generous portions of both corn on the cob and Southern belles festooned in Christmas lights . At its sister staging in Branson, Missouri (the original

Mistley Thorn, Mistley, Essex Hotel Reviews

Eating By early evening , the bar at the Thorn usually has a sprinkling of local residents who come for a chat over a glass of prosecco and a plate of oysters (native and Pacific) on the half-shell. We didn’t hesitate to join them and felt rather sophisticated, especially when Sherri came behind the bar and reminisced about her days catering on film sets in L.A. From movies to Mistley… The restaurant is open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner; special dining events are often held, too. Emphasis is on locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood . Our starter of griddled diver scallops with pea puree mint and lemon was spot-on. The Adnams beer battered local fish main was delicious. Non-briney types and vegetarians are not overlooked, and when it comes to the puddings, words cannot describe Sherri’s yummy key lime cake . On Thursdays, the 'Moules Madness' menu is particularly good fun: choose from marinière, Thai-style or mussels in cioppino. At breakfast, cereals and

I Stopped Straightening My Hair Cold-Turkey

Gambar
When I was really young, I hated mornings. I’d go to bathroom to be met by my mother holding a hairbrush soaked in water. We’d both face the mirror and she’d take the wet brush to my head, then would tie my hair back into a half pony. I looked neither bad nor good — just plain average, which is so much worse than either. I bought my first hair iron from CVS at age 15. It was Conair (no relation to Nicholas Cage) and christened an extremely inefficient routine that I would carry late into my 20s. I would wash my hair, wait for it to dry (by air, never blow dryer) and then I’d start ironing, piece by piece, beginning at the nape of my neck and working my way up to the crown and my top-of-head roots. All in, I’d need about three hours to feel presentable enough to simply go outside — even if I was just running to get a coffee, or buy a grocery (singular). With straight hair, I felt much prettier, cooler and a hell of a lot more confident. Not all hair struggles are equal. For so many wom

This was getting ridiculous. How could something so tiny make such a noise for so many hours? According to my wife, Emma, this was ‘sleep-training’ and she was refusing to go downstairs to deal with it. But I couldn’t take it any longer. The last time I’d looked at my bedside clock, it was four in the morning, and I couldn’t say how much time had passed since then as I’d placed a pillow over my head in a bid to block out the noise. For the first half of the night, we’d had a steady stream of visits and complaints from our four children. The younger two, Frank and Honey, eight and six, were the first to shuffle in, asking if they could play on their Nintendo DS consoles until the puppy decided to call it a night.
