Hi everyone! Another busy week here in NYC as the Summer winds down.

Monday August 21st
Hayden Special Event: Total Solar Eclipse at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Monday August 21st 12n-4p. Free with Museum admission. On the afternoon of August 21, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking out the Sun for about 3 minutes in a swath of North America stretching from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. While New York is not in this “path of totality,” we will be able to see the Moon cover more than 70 percent of the Sun. Join us in the Rose Center for Earth and Space for NASA’s live broadcast of the Total Solar Eclipse and learn more about this rare celestial event. Note: The Arthur Ross Terrace will be open Monday August 21st from 1pm – 4pm for the Eclipse event. Lawn chairs and blankets are not permitted. Seating will be limited. Accessible entry at 81st Street Entrance.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at the NY Hall of Science
Monday August 21st 1-4p. Free with Museum admission. Where are you viewing the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st? NYC is not in the “path of totality,” which means that we will not be able to see a total eclipse of the Sun by the Moon, but we will be able to see a partial eclipse. Please join us between 1 – 4 pm for a viewing party. We will have a variety of ways to safely view the eclipse, and you can make your own pinhole projector. We will also have eclipse glasses to share. We do not have enough glasses for everyone to have their own, so if you have glasses, please bring them or be willing to share. Estimated Eclipse timeline: 1:23 pm Partial Eclipse begins: The Moon touches the Sun’s edge. 2:44 pm Maximum Eclipse: The Moon is closest to the center of the Sun. 4 pm Partial Eclipse ends: The Moon leaves the Sun’s edge.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party! at the Clinton Hill Brooklyn Public Library
Monday August 21st 130-4p. Free. All ages welcome! On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible on a narrow path stretching across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. The rest of the United States will see a partial eclipse, in which the Moon covers only a portion of the Sun. Though not as awe-inspiring and memorable as a total eclipse, a partial eclipse is also pretty cool – and it’s just as dangerous to look at without something to protect your eyes from the Sun’s damaging rays! Come make a pinhole viewer and decorate the sidewalk with chalk drawings of your favorite planets or constellations! New York Classical Theatre: Macbeth in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Tuesday-Wednesday August 22nd-23rd & Friday-Sunday August 25th-27th at 7p. Free. 120 minutes, no intermission. No tickets required! Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Ambition goes unchecked by moral restraint and destruction befalls all but a lucky few. This classic story of the perils of ultimate power is fueled by the supernatural forces that haunt the castles and forests of early Scotland. Meet @ Fulton Ferry Landing on Pier 1. Please note that folding chairs & lawn furniture are prohibited in Brooklyn Bridge Park except for seniors & those with disabilities. We suggest bringing a blanket!
Red Hook Flicks: Minnions at Valentino Pier
Tuesday August 22nd. The movies start at around 830p or when it is dark enough gets dark. Free movies on the water and under the watch of Lady Liberty! In case of rain, our kind sponsors at Home/Made will be hosting us at their event space Atelier Roquette, located at 63 Commerce Street, between Van Brunt and Richards. If it is raining, assume the movie will be at Atelier Roquette. If it was raining earlier, the grounds could still be mucky. Please check website for an official “rain” call by 6 p.m. on movie nights.

“Community Cowpoke Class” with Hopalong Andrew at Whole Foods (Gowanus)
Wednesdays 10-11a. Free. Whole Foods Brooklyn in Gowanus and New York City’s singing urban cowboy Hopalong Andrew will be holding a free cowpoke class on a weekly basis. These are urban cowboy-themed early childhood music & movement classes, primarily directed toward babies & toddlers.
African Dancing and Folktales at the 58th Street New York Public Library
Wednesday August 23rd 1030a. Free. Location: Community Meeting Room. A Summer Reading Program! Audience members become the storytellers in a series of African folktales as our facilitator guides them through an interactive African Dance class. Best for children ages 4 and older. Presented by Urban Stages.
Movies Under the Stars: Sing in Saratoga Square Park
Wednesday August 23rd 745-915p. Free. Join NYC Parks and New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for this free family film! This animated musical comedy tell the story of Koala Buster Moon presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine. This wonderful film features the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Hudson and Tori Kelly. Know Before You Go You should come before 7:45 p.m. to get your spot for the movie. Please bring your own picnic blanket or chair. Food is OK, but no alcohol or smoking is permitted.

US Open Experience at the Seaport District NYC
Thursday-Friday August 24th-25th 10a-8p. Free. The US Open Experience will be a modified version of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center featuring a recreation of the famed Unisphere at one end of Schermerhorn Row and anchored by a performance stage and “roofed” court at the north end of Schermerhorn Row. Visitors to the US Open Experience will be treated to a full slate of events, including player appearances, autograph signings, photo opportunities, food tastings and musical performances.
Miss Nina and the Jumping Jacks at the Park Slope Brooklyn Public Library
Thursday August 24th 330-415p. Join Miss Nina and the Jumping Jacks for move-along and read-along fun! Miss Nina’s passions are providing children and their families the space and opportunity to enjoy music and movement together. For ages baby to 8.
Chef Master: Youth Tech Workshop in Sunset Park
Thursday August 24th 12n-2p. Free. Participants will learn about the science of healthy and delicious eating, alongside the art of cooking and digital photography! This workshop is designed for kids who are younger than 14 years old. Location: Sunset Park Recreation Center.

Kids Camp: Fantastic Mr. Fox at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Downtown Brooklyn)
Monday-Thursday August 21st-24th 11a. Run time 107 minutes. Rated PG. All Kids Camp screenings are Pick Your Price – $1, $3, $5 – with 100% of ticket sales donated to CAMBA. In his youth Mr. Fox (George Clooney) was a wily rebel who stole chickens from coops and wrecked havoc on unsuspecting farmers. All that changed when Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep) became pregnant. Now Mr. Fox spends his days working a respectable post writing a column for the local newspaper and living a well-mannered, responsible life with his wife and son, Ash (Jason Schwartzman), but how long can this wild animal be caged by marriage and family? As a reward to himself Mr. Fox buys a nice treehouse in a pretigious part of the valley for his family to live in. There’s only one catch: the tree overlooks the farms of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, three men described by Mr. Fox’s realtor, Badger (Bill Murray), as ” three of the meanest, nastiest, and ugliest farmers in the history of this valley.” Soon, Mr. Fox can’t resist going back to his old ways of causing trouble, giving the three farmers reason to retaliate. They bomb Fox’s house and destroy the valley, making all the animals that inhabit there homeless. The only chance the animals have for survival is to band together and fight back against the oppressive farmers.
Kids’ Discovery Stations at Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Tuesdays, Thursdays-Fridays 1030a-1230p until August 25th. Free with Garden admission. This is a drop-in program for camp groups and families with children of all ages. Explore plants and use real science tools alongside Discovery Docents at our hands-on activity stations throughout the Discovery Garden. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather. Eloise Storytime at Dimenna Children’s History Museum (UWS)
Tuesdays-Fridays 2p until October 6th. Free with Museum admission. Skibble into the Eloise at the Museum story corner and listen to the exploits of the Plaza’s most famous resident.
Kids to the Rescue! at the Jewish Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Monday-Thursday 10a-5p, Sunday 10-530p until August 31st. Free with Museum admission. This is your child’s opportunity to engage with an age-appropriate emergency scene and discover the dynamic police, ambulance and fire departments. Climb aboard life size emergency vehicles for imaginative play, drive to the emergency scene, put out ‘fires’ with a giant wind hose, learn to recognize the uses for medical equipment and much more! Children will also learn to be prepared for any emergency with interactive dispatcher phones, CPR ‘Annie’ and ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ drills. The exhibit will feature scheduled guest visits from our favorite Safety Heroes. This is your chance to meet real-life NYPD police, FDNY fire-fighters, OEM disaster responders and many more. Hear their stories, snap a picture and show your support for the wonderful work that they do. The museum will also be visited by the FDNY smokehouse for hands-on fire emergency education.
MakerYard at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Thursday & Fridays 2-5p and Saturdays-Sundays 11a-4p until October 22nd. Free with Museum admission. Inspired by adventure playgrounds, MakerYard, Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s newest exhibition, invites children to test their motor skills and imaginations as they construct, build, and invent structures and other creations using everyday materials such as cardboard, tape, fabric, string and recyclables. Parents and caregivers are invited to sit back and let children explore independently, or work collaboratively to create together.
Kayaking in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Thursdays 530-645p until August 24th and Saturdays 10a-3p until August 26th. Free. Location: Pier 2. Glide along the water while kayaking with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse at the Pier 2 floating dock! Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. All levels are welcome and no experience is necessary. See the website for all the details.
Splash Pad at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Open daily until September 4th. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10a-7p and Sunday 10a-6p. Free. One Brooklyn’s coolest summer spots, the Splash Pad is designed for children under 12 and their parents and care-givers. With over 20 water jets, the Splash Pad provides state-of-the-art water play and admission is free to the public.
Dynamic H2O at Children’s Museum of Manhattan
Open weather permitting. Free with Museum admission. See website for Museum hours. For all ages. Outdoors. This summer our splashy Dynamic H2O exhibition, in CMOM’s Sussman Environmental Center, is the hot place for children to cool off! With 800 sq. ft. of hands-on interactives and cool colorful graphics, the exhibit offers visitors a fun place to chill while they learn how New York City gets its water and the role water plays in our local environment. An interactive water table helps children trace the path of New York City’s water as they play and explore. The story begins with the water cycle up in the clouds. Children can release a rain shower and place small floating droplets in the resulting river to follow as they progress downstream toward the city. As the water flows past floating lily pads, there’s an area where children can create waterfalls, build dams and pretend to fish. The opportunities for fun and discovery continue as the water streams toward a build-your-own city that awaits future engineers and architects. Children can pump water to the top of a skyscraper, create their own 92 mile aqueduct, and construct a city at the water’s edge! They can even try their hand at water-focused careers playing the role of marine scientist, chemical engineer, or even sewage treatment worker.
Victorian Garden at Wollman Rink (Central Park)
Everyday until September 10th at various times and admission & ride prices varies by day. See website. Enter park from 59th St. and 6th Avenue and walk north. Victorian Gardens is a traditional family amusement park featuring one-of-a-kind handcrafted rides, games of chance, classic concessions, face painting and live entertainment.
Free Bike Mornings on Governors Island
Monday-Friday 10a-12n until September 29th. Free Bike Mornings allows visitors to borrow a free bike from Blazing Saddle Bike Rentals for up to one hour every Monday-Friday from 10 AM to noon. Learn more about bike rental here.
The Princess, The Emperor and the Duck at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Mondays-Fridays 1030a & 12n and Saturdays & Sundays 11a & 1p until August 27th. Tickets are $8/children and $12/adults. A modern retelling of three classic Han Christian Andersen tales. Set in Africa, China and our own Central Park, The Princess, The Emperor, and The Duck retells storyteller Hans Christian Andersen’s world-famous fairy tales — The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling — bringing the Theatre to life with new marionettes and hand painted scenery. Guided by a narrating Owl, audience members fly into each story with the original tales that teach important life lessons still relevant to children today.
Drop in Play at SPARK by Brooklyn Children’s Museum (DUMBO)
Wednesdays 1-5p, Thursday 1-6p (admission is free Thursdays) and Fridays-Sunday 1-5p. $15/child. (BCM Passport Members enjoy free admission). Each day at SPARK, kids can: BUILD IT! Design your own structures in our popular exhibit Brooklyn Block Lab. MAKE IT! Creativity abounds in our art activities that change each week. TOUCH IT! Get cozy in our Discovery Den featuring soft play and reading space, and a series of discovery drawers that hold treasures from our collection as well as tactile materials for little hands to explore.
Ed Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3-5p and also Saturdays and Sundays from 1–5p. Free. The Ed Center is open for free, drop-in hours three afternoons a week! Get to know Brooklyn Bridge Park with our 250 gallon aquarium filled with critters from the East River, a 10’ scale model of Brooklyn Bridge Park, crafts, a reading corner, and much more!
