Project: Turn a master bath into a guest bathroom in Murray Hill, Manhattan

Before: With a baby on the way, owners Jeanne and Philip needed to convert their 1,000-square-foot apartment from a 1-bedroom into a proper 2-bedroom, 2-bath. What had been the master bathroom would be transformed into a guest bath. Previous owners had repurposed an adjoining closet as a large walk-in shower, but the remodel would reduce the footprint of both the bathroom and shower.

After: The Sweeten design and build teams took care of architectural documents for the co-op board and expedited city permits. The family’s goal was to turn the guest bath into an ADA-compliant space that was needed in the apartment. During demolition, however, they realized an existing step-up was necessary, for the sake of the underlying drain lines, so this room would not be able to function in such a capacity. An ADA-compliant space follows a federal guideline to provide greater access to people with limited mobility. (They enlarged the other bathroom instead.)

Dark grey floor tile disguises the step, one of three tile styles used. “I asked the designer to come up with different looks, then mixed and matched,” Jeanne says. “We wanted to be a bit more forward and get funkier,” she adds, so the clear blue subway tile is a design statement. In the shower, herringbone mosaic floor tile allows water to drain while improving slip-resistance thanks to its many grout joints.

Bonus: A new wall-hung toilet takes less floor space than a traditional toilet would.

Style findsKohler toilet; Fresca vanity; Grohe sink faucet; Robern medicine cabinet; toilet paper holder and a hand towel hook from Ginger; subway tile and herringbone mosaic from Nemo Tile; Daltile flooring; rain shower and hand-held system from Hansgrohe.

The color, shape and pattern of tile is a key player to a space’s personality. Take a look at Mollie’s shower wall which spotlights a bold chevron design.
