Anti-Materialism Parenting - No New Toys, Hand Me Downs

I started telling people I was pregnant at about six weeks along, which, I know, is abnormal etiquette to begin with, but so is telling everyone you run into that you’re happy to intercept their baby garbage before it hits Goodwill / the Bermuda Triangle / the actual trash. Because, of course, even the most minimalist baby does need some things — a car seat, for example (New York City hospitals won 't let you leave without one, and mine quickly shot down my proposal to take the subway home with a newborn and stitches in my vagina). After I put the word out, I soon got a used car seat — and the used stroller it fit into, and a used crib, and a used breastfeeding pillow, a used high chair, used bottles, hand-me-down baby clothes of all sizes, and yes, even a used breast pump — from kind co-workers, neighbors, friends, family, and my dentist. My son has never worn new clothes, but I promise you he hasn’t noticed.

I’m Just a Guy Who Owns Golden Showers Bath & Kitchen Showroom

January 11, 2017 I’m telling ya, it’s tough out here in the bathroom and kitchen remodeling industry . Prices for materials keep going up. Foot traffic keeps going down. And the HGTV DIY culture means more people want to install their own sinks and cabinets instead of hiring a professional. (Good luck with that, buddy!) I’ve tried to gimmick things up to bring in the customers, but boy, business sure has been slow down at Golden Showers Bath & Kitchen Showroom . Until today. I came in early this morning, and Karen almost knocked me over. “Karen,” I said, “buy a guy a drink first!” I’m always saying funny one-liners like that. “I never seen nothing like this before,” Karen said, pushing me over to the computer. She was in such a rush, she didn’t even laugh at my good joke. “Our website got three million hits overnight . Look!” I’m telling ya, I almost dropped my coffee right there on Gilligan’s Kitchen Island . Golden Showers got three million hits? That must be some kind of mist...

Saving Money and Saving the Environment

Gambar
One great thing about frugal living is that being frugal tends to lower your impact on the environment. In honor of Earth Day, we have collected some money saving tips and articles that are also good for the environment. Ride A Bike Get a bicycle. Goodwill stores often have nice used ones for $10 or so. Make sure it's the right size for you, it's comfortable and you know how everything on it works. Then put reflectors on it, a basket on the front and/or back, get a lightweight lock, and go for it. Optional: light, and rear-view mirror on handlebars. And please always wear bright-colored clothes when riding, or at least tie a bright scarf on the back. Thrifty, green people know how to avoid accidents. By Jantoo Cloth Bags For Groceries A few stores in my area, like Fred Meyer, have been selling sturdy reusable cloth totes to use instead of paper or plastic bags. They have nice handles, sit flat and are good for the environment. So I always remember t...

Look Inside A Run-Down Foreclosure-Turned-Country-Dream Home

Kelly & Her Home When house hunting, one of the most important things to consider is if a house has "good bones," which means it has many of the most desirable aspects that a home can offer (think: natural light, a comfortable layout, etc), even if those things are difficult to see at first. This term is particularly useful when viewing a house that is very old and run-down, needs a lot of work and is outdated. Lucky for Kelly Portnoy of The Good Story, she was able to see past the intense smells, stains and many other issues of one particular house. She says that even though it was unlivable when she first saw it, she and her family loved it and saw the potential it had. After moving into that house in 2012, she has worked hard to transform it into a dream home for her family, and the result is indeed dreamy. Without further ado, here's an intimate look at the beautiful space that Kelly, her husband and three children call home . Tell us how you came to find your hom...

I Almost Died During Childbirth. I’m Not Alone.

By Rachel Stuhler Aug 21, 2017 In the days after the birth of my second child, anxiety took over my mind and nightmares consumed my sleep. As soon as I'd drift off, I'd remember the nurses crowding around me, speaking rapidly, but I couldn’t understand their words. I'd remember picturing my 3-year-old son’s eyes — bright and expressive and the clearest blue I’ve ever seen. I hadn’t gotten to say goodbye to him before coming to the hospital, and in that moment, I was sure I never would. I would die right there in the labor and delivery ward, and leave him and my new infant son without a mother. When I'd awake in the dark, I'd panic, thinking I’d been taken back to the hospital. I would freeze, convinced my hands were covered in IVs and moving would tear them out. I was afraid to tell anyone what was happening, lest they think I was crazy. I knew many young mothers and no one talked about this kind of trauma. Had my mind been damaged by the delivery? I'd never fe...

Beyond the Bed, Bath and Beyond

I went to the Bed, Bath and Beyond a few days ago. I had to run in to get a new cartridge for my SodaStream machine because mine ran out and I have a serious addiction to bubbly water with a slice of lemon. I live in a college town and the kids are just getting back to school, so the place was packed. There were freshman and parents standing in the aisles, looking overwhelmed and dazed about what was about to happen to them. I grabbed what I needed and got in line to pay, when I noticed a girl and her father who were shopping together. The daughter was wearing a university sweatshirt and her father kept pushing up his glasses, clearly stressed out about choosing a desk lamp for her dorm. They looked ready to come to blows over color preference. He was showing her the features of the lamp he liked and she was having none of it. She liked the purple one. I tried not to stare, but I love watching the kids come back to school. I tend to be enamored with normalcy. Since I started acting as ...

Five Generations. Who Gets That? – Jenn Sutherland-Miller – Medium

A Eulogy for the Greatest of Grandmothers My earliest memory of my grandmother was at Brule Lake. I couldn’t have been more than three. The quilt frame was stretched wide and filled up the width of the cottage. Gram, my Mom, and maybe an aunt (I don’t remember how many women were there, or who they were), were quilting on one of the nine quilts my grandmother made for each of her grandchildren. Shiny needles, bending in and out, up and down, creating a pattern on the bottom that was an echo of the kaleidoscope of colors on top. I can still feel the fabric brushing the top of my head as I salamandered around beneath the fabric, a little moving bump from the top, my own private cave beneath . “Be careful, or we’ll stitch your head!” Someone chided me and so I ran, top speed out from under the frame, only to be caught in a wide swipe of Pawpaw’s arm, netting me like a fish as I raced by where he sat in his chair by the wood stove. In my little world, Grandma was always a party. She arriv...
