Living With Ichthyosis | HealDove

What Is Ichthyosis? For those who don't know what Ichthyosis is, I will begin this article with a definition from FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types ): "Ichthyosis is a family of genetic skin disorders characterized by dry, scaling skin that may be thickened or very thin. The prefix "ichthy" is taken from the Greek root for the word fish. Each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of ichthyosis. Ichthyosis affects people of all ages, races and gender. The disease usually presents at birth, or within the first year, and continues to affect the patient throughout their lifetime." I myself was diagnosed when I was 6 years old, and as annoying as it is being compared to a snake, fish, or any other creepy amphibious being, that is the right term to describe it. That aside, Ichthyosis—even mild types like Ichthyosis Vulgaris—are hard to manage and control. I am going to tell you how I manage my Ichthyosis and hope that it helps o...

Bathroom remodel: Look for bargains to offset expensive taste

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – I’ve never visited the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Denver, but I can pretend. That’s because I have a stainless steel soaking tub in my master bathroom that’s made by the same company that built the custom tub for the Four Seasons spa. Story continues below It’s not that I have a limitless budget, but I temper my expensive taste in bathrooms with discount shopping . A look around my master bath is a primer on where to find bargains: display models, clearance sales, Craigslist, eBay and architectural thrift stores (also known as repurpose or re-use stores). For instance, I found my Japanese soaking tub for half price on the manufacturer’s website.“It was the luck of the timing,” said Diamond Spas Inc. owner Stephanie Bennett . The company was selling its display models before moving into a new facility in Frederick, Colorado.I picked my tub up in person, but many other buyers only saw photos and then paid to have their purchase crated and shipped, Bennett sai...

Rioters On How To Make Time For Reading

One of the questions I get asked the most is “how do you find time to read so much?” I have small kids, a full time job, and a writing habit that I sustain, but reading is one of those things that I need, like water and sunlight. When I stop picking up books, my mental health is affected, so I’ve had to find ways to make the time. My best trick is to bring a book with me on the elliptical machine– the exercise and chance to dive into a story both leave me feeling strong and happy. Recent Book Riot Insiders newsletters gave a peek into the day-to-day of Book Riot back office superstars , and I loved hearing how they crafted time in their schedules to read.  It made me wonder how other voracious readers feed their habit. Whether you’re looking to up your reading time or you already have a day packed with bookish goodness, this look into the time-saving tricks of other Rioters is interesting! Jamie Canaves:  I sneak reading into as many things as I can all day long: audiobook on speaker...

13 Tips for Successful Baby Travel

Gambar
Over the past 3 years we’ve learned a lot about what makes or breaks a trip with an infant. We’ve also learned that traveling with one baby is very different than traveling with two (shocking, I know). Let’s just say, I’ve gained a huge respect for those brave families that travel with 3 or 4 little ones. To you, I tip my hat. Last week, I received a message from a nervous mother about to take her infant on a flight for the very first time. I vividly remember feeling the same anxiety before our first few trips with Braydon (our first born). In preparation for her trip, she asked me to share my most useful baby travel tips . I sent her the link to our other blog Tips for Baby Travel  and later realized we haven’t written a detailed “ baby travel tips ” article on this site. We get asked this question quite often, so I thought it was about time we wrote a post dedicated to baby travel. We’ ve intentionally limited the amount of baby posts we publish on this site because we know a lot o...

Student Questions: Energy Shots and Sunscreen

Skeptoid answers another round of questions sent in by students.   by Brian Dunning Filed under Feedback & Questions Skeptoid Podcast #268 July 26, 2011 Podcast transcript | Download | Subscribe Listen: http://skeptoid.com/audio/skeptoid-4268.mp3 Although I ran, I've again been caught by students from around the world, and peppered with questions about what's science and what's silly. Today's classroom asks about the usefulness of those popular caffeinated energy shots ; the various Internet myths about sunscreen products; the meaning of the word "information" when thermodynamics are invoked to prove creationism; companies that claim to offer the secrets of suppressed miracle cures for cancer; and whether drinking hot water from the tap is as risky as some rumors say it is. Let's get started with energy shots, from a young man in southern California: Hi, Mr. Dunning. What's your take on those 5- Hour Energy Shots , and how they affect the u...

How a Mesh Shower Curtain Can Improve Your Bathroom October 13, 2014 by Joe Ness Source: Cascade Coil Photo: Ty Milford Metal mesh works really well in the bathroom. Dealing with nasty grout & caulk in the apartment bathroom.

Gambar
Remember the pinkish-tan/Band-Aid bathroom in my apartment? I’m still doing the best I can (short of gutting the whole thing) to make it feel cleaner, fresher and generally less awful, and my latest improvement measure was taking care of the undeniably revolting perma - mildew situation inside the bathtub/shower area. I realize the photo above might not look like much of an “after,” but let’s consider where we started: I know. It was really gross. Believe me, even after scrubbing everything with bleach and hot water, this was as clean as it got. There were loose tiles (hence the taped-up garbage bag, an attempt to keep water from getting inside of the wall) and failing grout, and nearly all of the caulk had gone permanently black . The outer layer of caulk was actually clear silicone, and I’m thinking the mildew likely came from the first layer of caulk having been applied over even older “infected” caulk without properly preparing the area first. Want to take a closer look? I’m sor...
