How to Tile a Bathroom Floor

Tiling a bathroom floor is one of the most cost- effective home improvement projects that needs moderate skills and correct materials. It’s a great way to add value to your bathroom remodel and can allow you to add upgrades like radiant heat. It’s easier than ever to source great-looking, affordable tile . Choosing the right tile color and style When selecting a tile for the floor, the color should be neutral and coordinate with your cabinetry, paint color and shower or bathtub. If your bathroom floor tends to get messy from dust and debris, consider a tile that isn’t a solid color – a variety of color changes or textures will do a better job hiding dirt than a solid color. Using a light color may contribute to a greater sense of space but that theory isn’t always true. The color choice should be more dependent upon how the color of the floor tile relates to the other colors in the room. Be sure you bring home samples of your top choices and set them on the floor next to your ot...

How to Clean Glass Shower Doors (the easy way!)

Gambar
Everybody has their own ways of cleaning.  I have noticed that people have different ideas of clean.  And I have really noticed this as I have looked around the internet (Hello, Pinterest!) to find solutions to household cleaning questions .  I often run into “solutions” that just don’t work for my housekeeping problem.  My latest problem was our spotty, streaky, hard water stained glass shower .  You might not have noticed it immediately upon stepping into my bathroom, but I hated how spotty my glass shower was.  Mind you, it was really upon close inspection, that you would have noticed my clear problem.  And so I went to the internet to solve all my household problems.  What I wanted was “like-new” shower glass .  What I got, was not!  And I tried a LOT of solutions. And then my nerd cleaning buddy , Gil (a car glass repairman ) and I were talking cleaning one day (as you do) and he gave me a discourse (seriously!) on the best products for cleaning glass .  I was overwhelmed by his e...

Dealing with nasty grout & caulk in the apartment bathroom.

Gambar
Remember the pinkish-tan/Band-Aid bathroom in my apartment? I’m still doing the best I can (short of gutting the whole thing) to make it feel cleaner, fresher and generally less awful, and my latest improvement measure was taking care of the undeniably revolting perma - mildew situation inside the bathtub/shower area. I realize the photo above might not look like much of an “after,” but let’s consider where we started: I know. It was really gross. Believe me, even after scrubbing everything with bleach and hot water, this was as clean as it got. There were loose tiles (hence the taped-up garbage bag, an attempt to keep water from getting inside of the wall) and failing grout, and nearly all of the caulk had gone permanently black . The outer layer of caulk was actually clear silicone, and I’m thinking the mildew likely came from the first layer of caulk having been applied over even older “infected” caulk without properly preparing the area first. Want to take a closer look? I’m sor...

From a crowd- funded smart shovel to a why-didn’t-someone-do-this-sooner scheme for managing traffic in public restroom s, these ideas are noteworthy for creative problem -solving. Here are some of the most intriguing innovations the BD+C community has brought to our attention this year.   1. TRUSS SYSTEM UNDERGIRDS MONUMENTAL STAIR Structure becomes art at a Massachusetts college library To invite exploration of its new academic library, Salem (Mass.) State University selected a light-filled and airy design. The site and program called for deep floor plates , so the Building Team devised a dramatic open staircase as a central feature to help break up the density. The engineering solution consists of a truss that supports the whole stair, with each step created from a triangular box beam that hangs off the truss. Stairs are stringer-free and accented with eye- catching red paint . Glass panels protect users while showcasing the design. The prominent feature is also visible from...
