Baby Hair Care

Gambar
Quick Hair Tips Alexandra Grablewski Whether it's thin, thick, curly, or practically nonexistent, parents love to run their fingers through their baby's hair just for the pure pleasure of it. And seeing it sticking up in the morning or slick and wet in the bath is one of those wonderful little joys of parenthood. In fact, many moms put off baby's first haircut for as long as possible, because seeing those wispy little curls fall to the floor is often the first sign that babyhood is coming to an end. But eventually (like when your baby can't see through the hair in his eyes!) some locks have to go. And beyond haircuts, there's more to baby hair care -- even if your baby hardly has any. If your baby has no hair... Care tip: Shampoo twice a week to avoid cradle cap -- oily, flaky patches of skin on the scalp. Styling tip: Hats are a must to protect baby's head from the sun -- and a bonnet or baseball cap can help strangers tell a girl from a boy. If your bab...

How To Use a French Bathtub to Shower and Wash Hair?

Gambar
Today, I’ll unravel the mystery ;-) Taking a Shower in a French Bathtub Without curtain, there is just no way you can take a standing shower… I mean, if you are REALLY petite and thin, you might be able to stand up and direct the flow towards the back wall, but it’s going to be almost impossible not to splash around. Your choice is between: sitting in the empty French bathtub (la baignoire) actually taking a bath (un bain) Showering in an Empty French Bathtub So you’re going for solution number one, and decide to sit down in the cold empty French bathtub . Shower yourself keeping the shower very close to your body,  directing it slightly towards the back wall. It’s possible, not super comfy, but I’ve done it many times when there was not enough water to run several baths in a row, or when I was in a hurry. If you are washing your hair, and it is long, you are asking for trouble…… As you are shampooing, either: turn off the shower (and freeze), or hold the shower head between your knee...

I Stopped Straightening My Hair Cold-Turkey

Gambar
When I was really young, I hated mornings. I’d go to bathroom to be met by my mother holding a hairbrush soaked in water. We’d both face the mirror and she’d take the wet brush to my head, then would tie my hair back into a half pony. I looked neither bad nor good — just plain average, which is so much worse than either. I bought my first hair iron from CVS at age 15. It was Conair (no relation to Nicholas Cage) and christened an extremely inefficient routine that I would carry late into my 20s. I would wash my hair, wait for it to dry (by air, never blow dryer) and then I’d start ironing, piece by piece, beginning at the nape of my neck and working my way up to the crown and my top-of-head roots. All in, I’d need about three hours to feel presentable enough to simply go outside — even if I was just running to get a coffee, or buy a grocery (singular). With straight hair, I felt much prettier, cooler and a hell of a lot more confident. Not all hair struggles are equal. For so many wom...

9 Things In Your Bathroom You Probably Aren't Cleaning Enough

Gambar
I’m sure we all have our own routines when it comes to cleaning the bathroom. I usually start with the toilet, then move to the shower, then address the sink, mirror, and floors. In fact, if I can clean all of those in one go, I’m probably feeling really productive! But beyond those weekly maintenance cleanings , there’s definitely more we should be doing. Bathrooms have the potential to become the dirtiest room in the house if left unchecked, due to the unique combination of warmth, humidity, and bacteria that congregate there. But with just a few basic cleaning supplies , it’s easy to keep your bathroom (and the things you store in there) clean and healthy. Here are 9 common bathroom items that could probably use a cleaning. 1. Bath Toys Bath toys can build up layers of soap scum and mildew if they aren’t being cleaned. A quick soak with some vinegar will take care of that! Just put your bath toys into a bucket, then fill with warm water and add 1 cup of white vinegar . Let the toys...

Five Generations. Who Gets That? – Jenn Sutherland-Miller – Medium

A Eulogy for the Greatest of Grandmothers My earliest memory of my grandmother was at Brule Lake. I couldn’t have been more than three. The quilt frame was stretched wide and filled up the width of the cottage. Gram, my Mom, and maybe an aunt (I don’t remember how many women were there, or who they were), were quilting on one of the nine quilts my grandmother made for each of her grandchildren. Shiny needles, bending in and out, up and down, creating a pattern on the bottom that was an echo of the kaleidoscope of colors on top. I can still feel the fabric brushing the top of my head as I salamandered around beneath the fabric, a little moving bump from the top, my own private cave beneath . “Be careful, or we’ll stitch your head!” Someone chided me and so I ran, top speed out from under the frame, only to be caught in a wide swipe of Pawpaw’s arm, netting me like a fish as I raced by where he sat in his chair by the wood stove. In my little world, Grandma was always a party. She arriv...

The Elizabeths: Elemental Historians

Gambar
by Carla Nappi CONJECTURES #4 For the most part, working professional historians bring to their sources a fundamentally forensic sensibility: they tend to treat their archival scraps like so many clues , which, rightly read, permit the reconstruction of events and persons. There is much to be said for this program, which works pretty well. But it does have its limits. For instance, certain old tidbits afford a queer intimacy with the past that seems to exceed their evidentiary utility. A death mask may display, trapped in white plaster, a single hair once belonging to the human whose visage we contemplate. The hair is of severely limited utility to a practicing historian, yet it rather seethes with an urgent presencing of the past — and that clearly has something to do with the work of history. So what’s to be done? In this excerpt from a larger project, the imaginative historian of Chinese science Carla Nappi permits a dreamscape to rise from four archival fragments — four obliqu...

She Knew I Would | Filthy

Feeling my phone vibrate and looking down to see it was you was surprising. We hadn’t talked in weeks and honestly I was never expecting to hear from you again. But here you were on my phone, so I answered. “Can you meet me somewhere?” you asked. And that shocked the hell out of me. No hello or how are you just, “Can you meet me somewhere.” Curiosity got the best of me and before I knew it, I agreed. Two hours later I’m sitting in the car at this hotel that was half way for both of us and you had already texted me to tell me the room number. I am staring at this building thinking about how quickly everything went really bad and you just walked out my life. There it is again that vibration from my phone and again it’s you and text that reads. “You’re late. Hurry up I want to fuck you.” Now I am really lost just sitting here in the car smiling because your text just turned me on when I know I should be mad because you think it’s just that simple and easy to get me into your bed. I text b...
