Living With Ichthyosis | HealDove

What Is Ichthyosis? For those who don't know what Ichthyosis is, I will begin this article with a definition from FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types ): "Ichthyosis is a family of genetic skin disorders characterized by dry, scaling skin that may be thickened or very thin. The prefix "ichthy" is taken from the Greek root for the word fish. Each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of ichthyosis. Ichthyosis affects people of all ages, races and gender. The disease usually presents at birth, or within the first year, and continues to affect the patient throughout their lifetime." I myself was diagnosed when I was 6 years old, and as annoying as it is being compared to a snake, fish, or any other creepy amphibious being, that is the right term to describe it. That aside, Ichthyosis—even mild types like Ichthyosis Vulgaris—are hard to manage and control. I am going to tell you how I manage my Ichthyosis and hope that it helps o...

Baby Bath-Time Challenges | What to Expect

Instead of happily splashing in the water, your baby wails whenever it’s time to take the plunge. What gives? Well, there are many possible reasons for your water woes. Your little one may be letting you know (loudly!) that she’s cold. Or she may hate getting her tiny face wet or her hair shampooed. Then there’s the move to the big tub. Some tots have a hard time making the transition. But hang in there. We’ve got a boatload of tips to make your baby bath time a fun time for all. Fix the freeze. Because babies get cold easily, make sure the room is toasty (75°F to 80°F is ideal). If you’re in the bathroom, you can steam up the room by running the shower before your baby’s bath time. And have everything ready (supplies gathered, tub filled) before you undress your tot. Get all hands on deck. How to slip your slippery little fish into the tub without startling her? With her head resting on your arm and your palm under her bottom, hold her arm securely with your other hand. Then gentl...

Make your glass cooktop shine again

Glass cooktops are very popular. When you first get them, they look sleek, shiny and very nice. But over time, they can lose their shine and get a buildup of burned food on them that is hard to clean off. Here are some super tips and tricks to help you get that sleek shine again. The smooth, sleek look can be ruined if you use harsh, abrasive cleaners, so don't chance it. Make sure you cooktop is turned off and cool. Lay paper towels over the surface, and then wet them with warm water and dishwashing soap. Leave them to sit for an hour or so to loosen up things. Then remove the paper towels and wipe off what you can. There are some cleaners made just for glass cooktops available at your grocery store or hardware store, and most work pretty well, but not that much better than warm water and soap. You'll need to get a razor- type paint scraper and use it, carefully, to remove the cooked-on residue. Wipe it off periodically with a plastic s...

Gambar
Courtesy Summer Infant Attention, parents of babies! Summer Infant is recalling 86, 000 baby bath slings due to the risk of submersion and drowning. If you own a Lil' Luxuries Whirlpool, Bubbling Spa & Shower bathtub made by Rhode Island- based baby product manufacturer Summer Infant , you should know the fabric sling that secures the headrest to the bath frame to aid in supporting newborns and infants at bath time is missing a white plastic clip and can become detached. Tips for Choosing a Safe and Comfortable Bathtub for Your Baby

Bathing a small, squirming baby in a tub can be a nerve-wracking experience to say the least. While some babies do love the feel of water, there are others who would start wailing just at the sight of the bathtub. This is why, as a parent, you need to get a bathtub that is not only safe for the baby, but also makes bath time a fun and enjoyable experience for the baby and you. There are some parents who bathe their babies in regular tubs. However, having a special free- standing baby bathtub allows you to wash the baby with ease without having to worry about the baby slipping or banging his head on the hard surface. There are many types of baby tubs available in the market. Most of them have special features like contoured design and anti- skid bath surface that makes bath times safer and more fun.

A few adjustments can keep aging adults safe in the bathroom

You know your home pretty well. But as we age, even the most familiar spaces unexpectedly can become challenges, especially if you’re becoming prone to falls and balance issues. Even if you’re not experiencing health problems , falling on a hard surface when you’re in your 60s or 70s can affect your body differently than a similar accident in your 20s or 30s. Of all the rooms in your house, the bathroom is the most likely site for an accident. According to Consumer Affairs , a 2011 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that almost 200,000 Americans are treated in emergency departments for bathroom- related injuries annually . There are slippery surfaces and hard flooring. Consumer Affairs targets three areas where falls are most likely to occur: getting in or out of the shower or tub; trying to use sink tops or towel bars to support balance and sitting down and getting up from the toilet. Grab bars Grab bars can greatly help reduce the risk of falls. What’s...

See You Later Alligator!

For many of us, winter brings cold dry air that is made worse by the effects of central heating, especially if you have a forced-air furnace. The end result can be dry skin -- sometimes dry to the point of scaly. The clinical name for the condition is xerosis, and while most of us muddle through the winter months with a heavy reliance on skin cream, there are instances when you should seek medical attention for dry skin. According to the NIH Medline Plus online health information site , if you have itching without a visible rash, dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping, you have open cuts from scratching and/or your home measures aren 't helping, see your doctor. For the rest of us, there are very simple steps we can take to reduce the itchiness and flaking we might be facing. Your best defense against dry skin starts in the morning, as soon as you step into the shower. As much as possible, keep bathing to a minimum, using as little soap as possible. Limit the use o...

Sign up for eletters today and get the latest how-to from Fine Homebuilding, plus special offers. Freestanding bathtubs are popular, and with good reason. Whether modern or traditional, they add elegance to a bathroom like nothing else. Though often reserved for bigger baths, freestanding tubs can work in smaller spaces with the right layout, design, and tub choice. (Still, while freestanding tubs are perfectly suited to master baths, they’re not right for all situations. They may be problematic for bathing small children , for example.) A freestanding tub is typically the focal point of the bathroom, so it makes sense to determine its location first and then to lay out the other elements — the shower, vanity, and toilet — around the tub, using them in ways that support the design. There are several things to keep in mind when including a freestanding tub in a bath, starting with the size of the tub. Tub length is best determined by having the bather try out different tubs. A 6-ft. tub...
