Comfort Essentials & Summer Tips First-time mom-to-be Deanna Moran found the New York humidity to be uncomfortable and overwhelming during her summer pregnancy . "You are always hot and no matter how high the air conditioning is turned up it just is never good enough," she said. Like the over 1 million expectant moms last summer, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, Moran found that being pregnant during the hot and sticky days (and nights) of summer had its downsides. But Dr. Sara DuMond, a mom and pediatrician in South Carolina, says that there's a definite plus to carrying during this time. "Delivering in a warm weather month means that both mom and baby will be able to get fresh air, which can be vitally important," DuMond says. With a little preparation and these simple tips, you'll be able to keep your cool -- and enjoy! -- your summer pregnancy . Chapped Hands | Prevention

MORE: 9 Bad Habits That Make Your Winter Skin So Much Worse Bolster Your Barrier The skin on the hands acts like a barrier to keep moisture in, says Monica Halem, MD. If this barrier is disrupted by extreme weather conditions , sun exposure, dry air, or certain disease processes, the result can be very dry, itchy, red, cracked, and sore hands. To combat this, reestablish the skin barrier on your hands. “The skin barrier is made of three key elements—ceremide, cholesterol, and triglyceride,” Halem says. There are several creams and lotions on the market that contain all three ingredients; check the label to make sure all three are listed. “And keep in mind that a cream (oil-water mix) is much richer than a lotion (water-oil mix), and better to use for dry hands,” she says. Don't Go Near The Water Although you were probably taught to wash your hands often throughout the day, if you have chapped hands, water is not your friend. In fact, water is the worst influence for chapped hands....

Living With Ichthyosis | HealDove

What Is Ichthyosis? For those who don't know what Ichthyosis is, I will begin this article with a definition from FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types ): "Ichthyosis is a family of genetic skin disorders characterized by dry, scaling skin that may be thickened or very thin. The prefix "ichthy" is taken from the Greek root for the word fish. Each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of ichthyosis. Ichthyosis affects people of all ages, races and gender. The disease usually presents at birth, or within the first year, and continues to affect the patient throughout their lifetime." I myself was diagnosed when I was 6 years old, and as annoying as it is being compared to a snake, fish, or any other creepy amphibious being, that is the right term to describe it. That aside, Ichthyosis—even mild types like Ichthyosis Vulgaris—are hard to manage and control. I am going to tell you how I manage my Ichthyosis and hope that it helps o...

[ deleted account ] Quoting Shanda: This is going to sound weird, but I have a friend, and she has tried everything on her son. She has found that Crisco, the lard not oil, has worked wonders . She puts it on him the night before and clean him up in the morning. I hope that helps. The Crisco might work well.  I had a Dr. actually recommend it for a problem my daughter was having when she was very young, and it worked like a charm.  According to the doc, it was pretty useful for a variety of skin conditions.  Can you imagine I actually had to send it to school with her in a little tub with the Dr.'s "prescription" attached?! [ deleted account ] I use this kind of hard-to- find cream called Resinol .  You may have to ask your pharmacist to order it for you, but it isn't a prescription.  It's a mixture of calamine, zinc oxide, & resorcinol and is made by the Mentholatum Co.  If you know a mom & pop pharmacy, they might even have it on hand; that's usual...
