How to Switch out Wall and Hand-Held Shower Heads

I was never quite sure whether I liked handheld shower heads or not. It always annoyed me that they moved around in their holder, or that you had to pick them up and unwind the hose in order to use them. But it wasn't until I got really frustrated with the one in my current granny-house that I began to wonder seriously what good they were. This article is about the benefits of handheld and fixed showerheads , and how to switch one out for the other. From Wall Mount to Hand-Held Shower Head Normally I would never consider switching from a wall mount "fixed" shower head to a hand held one, but for new parents or pet owners the switch can be helpful. Hand held shower heads can be used for a variety of tasks, including: Washing your dog (or cat) in the tub. Showing your child how to take a shower for the first time. Playing "spray the kid" if your child is whining about having to take a bath. Rinsing your face and hair when you're still in the tub, if you don...

Piping for a New Shower – Plumbing 101

Gambar
So you’re sick of your shower? You’ve seen some of the new gizmos at the home centers and you’d like to get in on the fun. This is going to be our first article in our new Plumbing 101 series. In this article we’ll talk about some of the latest features in shower plumbing and we’ll show you several piping diagrams that should help you decide what you want in your new bathroom apparatus and even how to pipe it yourself. SHOWER RAIN DOME This is a pretty easy upgrade . Basically it’s a huge shower head that makes you feel like you’re getting deluged with water. They come in different shapes like square and round and have a variety of sizes. The only thing you have to worry about is the height of the shower. Sometimes these rain domes sit lower in the shower. If the shower doesn’t have enough head room you’ll whack your noggin on it. SLIDE BAR WITH A HAND HELD SHOWER This can be done a couple different ways. Most commonly a slide bar is installed and the slide bar has an adjustable bra...

The ideal temperature for every shower

A large number of scalding injuries occur in the home, particularly involving children and the elderly, and reactions to freezing or boiling water in the shower increases the risk of falls and slips. Thermostatic shower valves can prevent these accidents by regulating the temperature of the water from your shower head. They also have the added bonus of being environmentally friendlier by cutting back water heating bills because the temperature is fixed. The thermostatic valves can maintain the water temperature at all times, even if the mains supply is interrupted by someone turning on a tap or flushing the toilet elsewhere in the house. In contrast, manual shower mixers allow more control over the water temperature and flow but there is more risk of it being freezing cold or boiling hot as there is nothing to regulate it as it flows out. This could be a problem depending on the plumbing and the boiler in your property. Thermostatic shower valves can be installed in conjunctio...

Splash out on an invigorating new shower packed with high-tech features and sleek, streamlined looks Published: 17th May 2016 There’s so much to consider when buying a new shower. Will it be a big freestanding enclosure  or neat over-bath model; high-tech controls or classic levers; a wet room set-up or conventional shower tray ; a traditional shower rose or barely there, flush- fitted panel set into the ceiling? Before you decide on anything, the first step is to find out what sort of hot water system you have at home as this will determine your choice of shower. Gravity- fed water systems are common in the UK (especially in older properties) and have a cold tank in the loft and hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard – the greater the drop from the bottom of the tank to the shower head, the better the shower’s performance. If the drop is less than one metre, you can add a pump to boost the water pressure or choose a power shower with a built-in pump. Most other water systems...

Retrofit Shower Panels: Bathroom Remodeling on a Budget

What Is A Shower Panel? These devices are relatively new on the market and many haven't seen or heard of them, so just what is a shower panel, and why a retrofit panel in particular. Shower panels are devices designed to replace the shower head in your tub or shower. An attractive panel, usually of stainless steel aluminum or glass, is hung in the tub or shower enclosure and will typically have several spray heads spread over it. The photo above is fairly typical of shower panels in general. Adding a shower panel is ideal for those doing a bathroom remodel on a budget; they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Most shower panels, however, are designed to be installed during the construction phase of the bathroom and are difficult (though not impossible as we will see) to install years down the road. A retrofit panel , then, is one designed to be easily installed long after the home is occupied. Take a glance over the small selection (there are dozens more available...

Style is important to us. Probably the decision to makeover your bathroom was reached not because of a crack in the bath, a leak in the shower, a problem with the toilet – these isolated incidences of damage or disrepair can be mended, replaced or simply ignored for a while. Most of us make the decision to replace our bathroom suites because we’ve lived with them long enough: our bathroom’s style is no longer appealing to us, we’re embarrassed by it, and we feel that it no longer suits our homes, our personalities, and our lives. If you’re looking to change the style of your bathroom, you should first think about the way in which you use the space you have. What do you like; what could be improved; what should be ripped out and thrown far, far away? Next, think about how you want your bathroom to look and perform. Looking specifically at showers, this involves asking yourself such questions as: Do I want a shower cubicle with a door, a walk in shower, or a wet room? Should my shower be...

Shower diverter problem can be quickly fixed

Q: I have a bathtub/shower combination, and when I pull the knob on top of the spout to start the shower, only a little water comes out of the shower head while most of it comes out of the tub spout. Do I have a clog in the pipe or is this a water pressure problem ? A: Neither. You have a shower diverter problem . We’ve all been there; it’s like trying to wash your hair with an eyedropper while your feet get saturated. The tub spout you have with the knob on the end of it is a shower diverter . The knob diverts water away from the tub spout and up to the shower head. In your case, the diverter needs to be replaced. This repair is easy and inexpensive. If all goes well, there will be plenty of water coming out of the shower head in about 30 minutes. Since the diverter is built into the tub spout, you must replace the entire spout. There are a variety of colors and finishes available at the home center starting at about $15. First, you need to remove the old spout, which fits on a copp...

Treehouse Villas at Saratoga Springs

Gambar
by Debra Martin KomaAllEars® Senior Editor Feature Article This article appeared in the June 15, 2009 Issue #508 of ALL EARS® (ISSN: 1533-0753) When I first started visiting Walt Disney World , in the early '90s, my family and I stayed several times at what was then known as the Disney Institute -- now Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. The studio villas there were spacious, but never fully booked, so we got some great rates. But when staying there I used to spy these really cool houses on stilts -- they were called Treehouses, and they accommodated larger families , so I didn't ever think I'd stay there. But I really wanted to! I had this romanticized notion of having a special place hidden up among the branches and leaves -- conjured up images of secret clubhouses built by ambitious dads for their kids. That's what the treehouses looked like to me, and I secretly plotted to find a way to stay there some day. When the Treehouses were closed in 2002, that dream wa...

Decorating ideas for small bathrooms

Gambar
The average small bathrooms in the UK measures just three square metres, but as they are one of the most used rooms in the house, it’s essential to ensure that all of the space is utilised in a redesign. Small rooms can be restrictive but, if you are imaginative, there are ways to make the most of the space you have. Minor alterations, such as raising a windowsill to fit a bath or basin below it, or adding a pocket or folding door, can help. Even rehanging a door to open outwards rather than inwards can save vital inches , meaning that the smallest room can feel more spacious. Here are ideas and examples to help you make even the smallest of spaces feel relaxing . Don’t shy away from using colour and pattern in a small space. In this en suite in a family home in Brighton, a focal point has been made of the floor with Moroccan-style tiles. This adds interest to the room without needing to overwhelm the walls with décor, which can make a small room feel narrower . To make the most of a ...
