Style is important to us. Probably the decision to makeover your bathroom was reached not because of a crack in the bath, a leak in the shower, a problem with the toilet – these isolated incidences of damage or disrepair can be mended, replaced or simply ignored for a while. Most of us make the decision to replace our bathroom suites because we’ve lived with them long enough: our bathroom’s style is no longer appealing to us, we’re embarrassed by it, and we feel that it no longer suits our homes, our personalities, and our lives.
If you’re looking to change the style of your bathroom, you should first think about the way in which you use the space you have. What do you like; what could be improved; what should be ripped out and thrown far, far away?
Next, think about how you want your bathroom to look and perform. Looking specifically at showers, this involves asking yourself such questions as:
- Do I want a shower cubicle with a door, a walk in shower, or a wet room?
- Should my shower be powerful or gentle? Do all the members of my household feel the same way?
- Would I prefer some added features like remote controls, in shower vhf marine radio, or LED lighting?
- Do I want classical elegance or sleek, contemporary style? Traditional spaces may benefit from a period style, fixed head shower, while an up-to-the-minute shower panel could be the best fit for a modern bathroom.
While your choice of shower system is largely about performance, your choice of shower enclosure has more to do with compatibility with your space.
- How much space do I have for my new shower? Look at your existing space as a whole. You shouldn’t replace like for like unless you’re 100% happy with your bathroom layout, since tweaking a room’s layout can improve its functionality dramatically.
- What type of shower enclosure will work best? Your ideal shower enclosure should fit comfortably in your bathroom and you should fit comfortably in your shower enclosure. Look at square, rectangular, quadrant and offset quadrant showers to determine which is the best fit, and choose doors that will open easily and provide ample room to get in and out – comfort and ease of use are paramount.
Knowledge is (shopping) power: having the answers to these questions in mind will help you to choose a shower that’s right for your home. Remember that many showers are flexible in the way that they perform: if members of your household have very different requirements, look out for a shower that’s got flexible features which will allow it to suit all of you without too much compromise.
