Summer Infant Recalls 86,000 Bath Tubs

Summer Infant is recalling 86,000 infant bath tubs because they present a risk of impact injury and drowning. The product affected is the Lil’ Luxuries Whirlpool, Bubbling Spa & Shower with fabric slings. It is a battery-operated tub that uses motorized jets. The infant is meant to be placed on a fabric sling on a plastic frame when bathing. However, the company has received reports of the sling detaching.

“Fabric slings on the recalled infant bath tubs can detach from the tub, posing a risk of impact injury and drowning.” according to a recall alert posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. CPSC and Summer Infant are aware of 91 reports where the fabric sling detached. There have been 11 cases where an infant received a bump to the head. The product is intended for children from birth to two years old.

The alert states that “The fabric sling on the recalled bath tubs does not have a white plastic attachment clip to hold the headrest area of the fabric sling to the plastic frame”.

The recall affects item numbers 18840, 18850, 18863, and 18873. The infant tubs were sold between October 2012 and October 2013 with date codes starting with 1210, 1211, 1212, 1301, 1302, 1303, 1304, 1305, 1306, 1307, and 1308. These numbers indicate the two-digit year followed by the two-digit month on the fabric sling.
