Founded in 1971 by Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein.
Bed Bath and Beyond was originally called it Bed 'n Bath and the first store was opened in New Jersey.
Bed Bath and Beyond grew from one single NJ store to having 17 more locations by 1985
Bed'n Bath changed their name as they grew in their merchandising to better reflect their full range of "domestic merchandise and home furnishing," as the company puts it.
By 1991, BB&B hit $134 million in sales, allowing them to go public on the NASDAQ stock exchange just one year later.
The Company’s objective is to be a customer’s first choice for products and services in the categories offered, in the markets in which the Company operates. The Company’s strategy is to achieve this objective through excellent customer service, an extensive breadth and depth of assortment, everyday low prices, and introduction of new merchandising offerings, supported by the continuous development and improvement of our infrastructure.
How They Make the Million Dollar Sales:
Bed Bath’s merchandising concept—a massive space offering a plethora of products—is known in the retail world as a BIG:
BOX
INTRODUCING
The LOOP/
BIG BOX
strategy is a very strategic retail mechanism. This tactic allows Bed Bath and Beyond to sore high above all other competition in that they are able to sell a higher product margin to their consumer because of their stores layout.
This strategy allows higher sales because the customer is forced to be maneuvered throughout the entire store passing by all other merchandise to get to there final destination of product purchase.
Store Planning
Bed Bath and Beyond has it ALL which is why they are able to use the sales planning they do.
What is a Big Box/Loop Layout:
Loop Layout as we have learned in our text is designed to enhance to productivity of the store, starting the stores flow beginning at the checkout creating one large aisle/pathway for customers to "flow" throughout the store until they make it back to the checkout line.

This inevitably enhancing sales due to the fact customers are forced to see everything throughout the store as they make it back to the checkout line.

A large retail store whose physical layout resembles a large square or box when seen from above. A big-box store is characterized by a large amount of floor space (generally more than 50,000 square feet), a wide array of items available for sale, and its location in suburban areas. Big-box stores often can offer lower prices because they buy products in high volume. Also called supercenter, superstore, megacenter.
