Bathroom | Shower Curtain | Bath Accessories
Shower curtains are generally a feature of bathroom suites which incorporate a shower over the bath: the curtain is a simple yet effective means of preventing shower spray from soaking your bathroom. The popularity of the shower curtain is perhaps in part down to its budget-friendly design: while you can spend more, a decent, simple shower curtain need only set you back a few dollars.
If you have kids, the addition of a brightly coloured shower curtain is a simple way to add child-appeal to your bathroom. From cartoon characters to jungle animals to aquatic creatures (arguably the best choice for a bathroom!), child-friendly shower curtains come in a plethora of styles, all of which can help to soften an adult space and make it more welcoming for little ones.
If yours is an adult only household, you’ll find that shower curtains can bring to your bathroom a riot of colour or a wealth of intricate design that you’d pay considerably more for were you to add the same design, in the same proportions, as wall art. Add a block of bold colour with a one-shade shower curtain, opt for chic stripes, or go dotty for spots. Bring a burst of nature indoors by choosing an intricate, delicate pattern of soaring birds or oriental blossom, or keep it cool with a art print curtain.

Shower curtains are all about adding interest: you don’t have to add colour if you prefer not to, and your shower curtain should tie in with your other aesthetic choices. My favourite style for a monochrome, modern urban bathroom, for example, is a Banksy-style, black and white silhouette of a man walking through the rain with an umbrella.
Whatever your style, be aware that daily showering will leave deposits of soap scum on your shower curtain and that leaving the curtain pushed back when not in use will almost certainly result in the growth of mould or mildew. To combat these issues and keep your shower curtain looking its best, clean it regularly (washing it with a weak vinegar solution and rinsing well is a cheap and effective method). And when you’re not showering, swoosh the curtain across anyway – this will allow the whole surface area to dry out, giving mould little chance to gain a foothold, plus you’ll get to look at the gorgeous design on your curtain every time you visit the bathroom, too!
Finally, when it’s time for a change of decor in the bathroom, your old shower curtain can be recycled in a number of inventive ways: ‘Reader’s Digest’ lists six ways to use a shower curtain outside the bathroom in its section on ‘extraordinary uses for ordinary things’. From shelf liner and floor protector to blocking the growth of weeds in a garden landscaped with bark or gravel chips – shower curtains can be versatile outside the bathroom as well as attractive inside it!
