Summer Infant, a Woonsocket, Rhode Island company, has issued a recall for 86,000 Lil’ Luxuries Whirlpool, Bubbling Spa & Shower with fabric slings baby bath tubs due to the risk of injury and drowning. This product is sold with a fabric sling that can detach from the bathtub and cause an impact injury or cause the baby to drown, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The item numbers of the recalled bath tubs include 18840, 18850, 18863, and 18873. The tubs were sold nationwide at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and other children’s specialty stores between October 2012 and October 2013. In addition, the CPSC warns that these tubs are still likely being sold as secondhand items, possibly from parent to parent or in yard sales, thrift stores, etc.

The Summer Infant recalled tubs’ fabric slings are missing the white plastic attachment clip, which is supposed to secure the sling’s headrest area to the plastic frame to prevent injury. Tubs that do not have the clips can cause injury. To date, 91 reports have been submitted citing detached slings; including 11 reports citing injury to the baby, as he or she sustained a bump to the head.

Consumers, who have a Lil’ Luxuries tub that has a fabric sling with the white plastic attachment clip intact, can continue to use the item. However, if the attachment clip is missing, consumers are encouraged to discontinue use immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free fabric sling replacement that comes with a white plastic attachment clip.
