Installing a new shower? Unless you’re getting a walk-in shower or a bathtub/shower insert — which sometimes only requires a shower curtain — you’ll need to select a type of shower door. Here’s some information to help you choose. Sliding Shower Doors Sliding shower doors , also referred to as bypass doors, take up the least bathroom space of any type of shower door because they never expand inside or outside the shower. They typically consist of two to three panels that slide past each other on tracks along the top and bottom of the door. Because sliding shower doors come with at least two panels, they’re best used in wide shower openings measuring at least 60 inches. Framed sliding shower doors at a quarter- inch glass thickness , uninstalled, typically cost $175 to $500. Round Shower Doors Round shower doors , unlike most other types, open inward. They are ideal for corner showers. The curved glass gives you more elbow room, and the lack of a corner gives your bathroom more open...

Bathroom Tricks, by Christine Brun

Human size the basis of architectural and interior design standards . According to Scientific American, over the past 150 years, the average height of human beings in industrialized nations has increased by about 4 inches. Overall, the reasons for this are better food supply, improved diet and the control of diseases. When you visit a home built in the 18th century, ceilings are obviously lower and door frames are smaller. Depending on the style of the era, fireplace openings, room size and window size might also be more condensed and feel off. Therefore, remodels conducted in historic homes or apartment buildings are exceptionally challenging. We are attempting to deliver modern conveniences to homes that were originally designed for humans of different heights. I am picturing a house in Cavendish on Prince Edward Island in Canada where L.M. Montgomery wrote her famous tales about the red- haired orphan Anne of Green Gables. The narrow staircases and hallways and petite rooms are d...

Counting On Medicaid To Avoid Life In A Nursing Home? That’s Now Up To Congress.

Gambar
Ten years ago, a driver ran a stop sign as Jim McIlroy rode into the intersection on his motorcycle. Serious injuries left McIlroy paralyzed from the chest down. But, after spending some time in a nursing home, he returned to his home near Bethel, Maine. McIlroy does most of his own cooking since Maine’s Medicaid program paid for a stovetop that he can roll his wheelchair underneath to reach the food-prep area. His new kitchen sink has the same feature. Wheelchair- friendly wood flooring has replaced McIlroy’s wall-to-wall carpeting. The alterations plus a personal care aide — all paid for by Medicaid — enable McIlroy to stay in his house that he and his wife, who has since died, “worked really hard to own,” he said. The arrangement also saves Medicaid roughly two-thirds of what it would cost if he lived in a nursing home. McIlroy depends on the federal- state program ’s growing support of home- based care services — along with 2 million elderly or disabled Americans who rely on...
