W. Va residents told not to shower or do laundry because of chemical spill

Gambar
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A chemical spill left the water for 300,000 in and near West Virginia's capital city tinted blue-green and smelling like licorice, with officials saying Friday there was no indication of when it might again be safe for even mundane activities like showers and laundry. Federal authorities began investigating how the foaming agent escaped a chemical plant and seeped into the Elk River. Just how much of the chemical leaked remained unclear . Officials are working with the company that makes the chemical to determine how much can be in the water without it posing harm to residents, said West Virginia American Water president Jeff McIntyre. "We don't know that the water's not safe. But I can't say that it is safe," McIntyre said Friday. "Don't make baby formula with it, don't brush your teeth with it, don't wash it, don't shower with it, don't drink it. You can't just boil it," added McIntyre.  Fo...

How to Install a Shower Pan

Gambar
Photo: wayfair.com The shower pan is an unsung hero in cramped bathing quarters that rely on a walk-in shower instead of a full-size bathtub. Its role? Protecting your subfloor from water damage by aiding drainage. This waterproof floor covering —often made of fiberglass, acrylic, or tile—slopes just enough to direct water toward the drain in the floor, thus eliminating most problems caused by lingering water, from mold and mildew growth to structural issues like wood rot. Whether you’re remodeling a bathroom to include a shower pan where none existed before or replacing one that’s seen its day, basic plumbing skills and a free weekend are all you need when learning how to install a shower pan. Why Switch to a Shower? Many homeowners choose a shower (and thus a shower pan, because you can’t have one without the other) over a bathtub when renovating in order to increase the available floor space and make the bathroom feel larger . Walk-in showers tend to be sleeker in style than boxy ...

The diva among houseplants - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

Yes, ferns can be fussy and temperamental to grow indoors. So why bother? Ask any diva: They're worth it. December 02, 2010 | By Beth Botts, Special to Tribune Newspapers A maidenhair fern lives on a shelf above the shower in my brother's bathroom in San Francisco. If you've got to be a fern indoors, that's about the best spot you're going to get: a few feet from a sunny window, swathed in a cloud of steam at least once a day in the moistest room in the house, in a climate where, even in winter, the central heating is not always on. In Chicago, the indoor life is a lot tougher. From early October well into April, hot-air ducts and radiators dry the air like the Sahara sun. Plants that evolved in relatively dry places, whose large, thick leaves are coated to help keep water from evaporating away, have a better shot at survival. But for a delicate, vulnerable fern native to the floor of a rainy tropical forest , living in central heating can be like being baked in an...

A Custom Six-Pac - Truck Camper Magazine

Gambar
Ken “Bear” Iddins of Buffalo Hats reveals his unique eight-foot custom Six- Pac shell model with an extremely custom, tricked-out, and modified interior.  Are those really stained glass windows ? Many of us have dreamed of designing and building our own truck camper.  One moment you’re sitting in your dinette looking at the kitchen thinking, “Why didn’t they put another cabinet right there?” and the next you’re drawing a truck camper floor plan on a napkin.  We have certainly inked a few ideas this way over the years.  Then the reality the of cost and time involved in such an endeavor hit us.  If truck campers could be built in Photoshop, we would make the world’s greatest truck camper .  Until then, we’re probably just dreaming. Then again, what if we could buy a shell and then have it custom up-fitted to our exact specifications?  That eliminates the need to design and build the exterior structure and allows us to ...
