Marzipan Memories March 2, 2007 It’s amazing how intertwined scent and memory are. Certain smells can take you back to another place and time. The sharp scent of gas reminds me of NP stations in Trinidad, where men in red and black shirts pump your gas for you. The gas in my memory somehow has a sweeter and sharper smell than American gas does. The scent of freshly-struck matches and vanilla candles takes me back to blackouts and hurricanes, the week we spent without power after Hurricane Wilma. And the smell of almond soap takes me back to a horrendous job I had after I graduated from high school. The one good memory I have about that job was the delicious bathroom soap , how the scent would linger on my hands. I always wanted to find a similarly scented soap for myself, but this was the pink kind that’s installed in public restroom dispensers . Despite my love for that bargain basement soap , I’m a bit of a soap snob. I have yet to find a scent of Softsoap that I enjoy, and don...

Gloves or no gloves? Hand care after gardening

Gambar
Protecting a gardener’s hands: Your advice… Sometimes a post on our Flea Market Gardening Facebook page just strikes a chord with everyone.  This one did and the result is many fine tips for caring for our hands after gardening.  After all we still want to have soft hands…  Where do you stand on wearing gloves ? Awful hands! “My hands! I’m working them to the bone, and today THIS is what they feel like! Dirt under my fingernails just like when I was a kid! I pick up cement stepping stones to move them and feel the rough surface tear at my skin. What really gets me is the rough SIDES of my fingers that have tiny cracks. I should wear gloves more, I know, but I need someone to sternly tell me to do so! 🙂  What do you all do to care for your hands after gardening? ~~ Sue What you said: Deborah L. Cutter- Well, like you, I don’t like to wear gloves. I make sure I have a fingernail brush to get the dirt from under the nails when done and lots of lotion! Emily Diaz – The Satin hands sys...

Perlier Shower Cream and Body Balm Travel Set – Never Say Die Beauty

Gambar
I’ve been traveling a lot lately, and it’s made me pretty stressed out. (So what else is new, you say!). Nothing makes me feel better than a long, hot shower. (I know, it dries out my skin.) So I was thrilled to have a chance to try out four Perlier bath sets — shower cream and body lotion — in four different scents and ingredient combos. Promotional Product Perlier is an Italian brand of luxury bath and body products, made with natural or organic ingredients . I’ve seen the brand on HSN and its website, among other retailers. I am a shower gel and body lotion queen , but I never got a chance to try this lovely brand. I was so happy that it came my way through iFabbo, the beauty and fashion blogger’s site. The Perlier products came as a TSA- friendly travel set in a thick clear plastic envelope . The shower creams are 1.6 fl.oz./50 mL and the body lotions are 1.0 fl.oz./30mL. As you may be able to see in the photo, I couldn’t wait to try these babies, and I forgot to photograph them ...

The Gentle Art of Poverty

I am an old man in his sixtieth year. I have entered that decade of life which destroys the last illusion and beyond which lies death, swift or lingering, actuarial or real. I am also poor, incontrovertibly, humiliatingly poor, for the first time in my life. My total annual income , from a modest pension ($1980) and the interest ($168.75) from an equally modest savings account , is 6 percent of what I earned in my prime-and less than two thirds of the property tax I once paid on a five-bedroom home with swimming pool in Westchester County, New York. I am divorced and living alone in an alien city of 800,000 strangers. My aging body betrays me day by day; the ground I am losing now I lose forever. So I perceived myself, at any rate, when the plane from a foreign country dropped me in San Diego one night seven months ago. Behind me stretched an aimless, six-year, expatriate trail through the South Seas, Asia, and Latin America that began when divorce and its inevitable byproducts-seco...
