Half Bath | A Design Dream Come True

Gambar
After a few days of chaos, stress, illness & fun, it feels great to take a moment to decompress & share something I’ve been excited about completing – our half bathroom. In the midst of chaos, I find sanity in organization, peace in pretty. Even if the rest of me feels out of sorts, at least this little half bath doesn ’t. I often start projects – multiple at one time, never truly finishing one. Do you do that? I decided that this Spring, I would take some time to complete each space, giving each the finishing touches I always intended to, but neglected to do in favor of a new project {#celebratehome}. Our tiny little half bath is now everything I dreamed it would be! Here are a couple before photos for reference: The space was tight, dark & dated. The countertop over the toilet made me claustrophobic & the white carpeting, well, you know. We started remodeling the half bath immediately after moving into our home. We opened it up by removing the existing vanity ...

Island Remede: Coconut Oil | Afrobella

Gambar
Some kids can be so mean for no reason. I know, because I was one of them. Back in primary school, there was a sweet, shy Indian boy in my class whose mother slicked back his hair with coconut oil every day. For some reason, kids found that to be hilarious and a neverending source for mockery. I’m not even sure who started it, or where we learned that outlook but now I know — unfortunately and sadly — so much of that mockery was borne from racial difference and already at age six, seven, and eight, tiny seeds of prejudice ]were already taking root in our minds. Now that I’m all grown up, I realize how embarrassingly ignorant we all were. That boy’s mother knew what I have only now come to realize — coconut oil is amazing stuff. It’s considered a weight loss aiding superfood to those who ingest it, and a multi-use moisturizer for those who use it externally. If you haven’t added it to your beauty arsenal, I recommend you swing by your neighborhood fancy organic grocery store , stat....

Saving Money and Saving the Environment

Gambar
One great thing about frugal living is that being frugal tends to lower your impact on the environment. In honor of Earth Day, we have collected some money saving tips and articles that are also good for the environment. Ride A Bike Get a bicycle. Goodwill stores often have nice used ones for $10 or so. Make sure it's the right size for you, it's comfortable and you know how everything on it works. Then put reflectors on it, a basket on the front and/or back, get a lightweight lock, and go for it. Optional: light, and rear-view mirror on handlebars. And please always wear bright-colored clothes when riding, or at least tie a bright scarf on the back. Thrifty, green people know how to avoid accidents. By Jantoo Cloth Bags For Groceries A few stores in my area, like Fred Meyer, have been selling sturdy reusable cloth totes to use instead of paper or plastic bags. They have nice handles, sit flat and are good for the environment. So I always remember t...

Fels Naptha – 26 Uses (WWII Series)

Gambar
Picture by: icollect247 Fels Naptha! I had never heard of it until about 15 years ago and now I can’t live without it. My mother introduced me to it when I owned a used children’s clothing store. She told me that both my grandmother and great-grandmother always had a bar in their wash rooms. If you have never used it I suggest that you pick up a bar. You can find it in the laundry isle of most grocery stores and it only costs around $1.00 per bar. This little bar is great for so many things. Check out this list of uses that my family and I have come up with. Bathroom Bathtub/Shower – to clean, rub a wet bar of Fels Naptha on a sponge and wipe down  the tub/shower. Rinse. Grout – to clean, rub a soft brush across a bar of Fels Naptha before scrubbing the grout. Sink – to clean, rub a wet bar of Fels Naptha on a sponge and wipe down the sink. General Cleaning Aluminum – to clean and shine, rub a damp rag across a bar of Fels Naptha and buff the aluminum to a shine. Dish Soap – to make yo...

I Threw My Parents a "Grandparent Baby Shower," and It's Been a Total Lifesaver

Gambar
I’ve heard it said that grandparenting is the golden ticket — you get all the rewards without the responsibilities. As I watch my own parents and in-laws as grandparents, I’ve come to the conclusion that this saying is pretty accurate. For the most part, parents are the ones doing all the heavy lifting (i.e. disciplining, homework, diffusing tantrums, making them eat healthy on occasion …), whereas grandparents get to enjoy more of the fun stuff — the “highlight reel” type of moments (i.e. giving them special treats and taking them on exciting adventures). As a result, I’m pretty sure our parents were just as excited as my husband and I during our first pregnancy. As I prepared our baby girl’s nursery, our parents were excitedly discussing plans for creating their own little nooks for her. And as I gleefully added items to my baby registry, my mom was busy starting a children’s book collection and my mother-in-law was storing all the hand-me-downs from friends who had already joined ...

While this was a sponsored opportunity from Yahoo!, all content and opinions expressed here are my own. The wonderful thing about Christmas giving is that it gets everyone thinking about what their loved ones want and need.  Maybe you have someone on your list who spend her whole year thinking about others.  A nurse? A mom? A teacher, caregiver, or other thoughtful person?  Do you know what that caring person really needs this time of year?  A minute to relax! Gifts that encourage you to take some time for yourself are sure to be appreciated.  After I checked out this video on Yahoo! on how to DIY your own bath teas, I got the urge to make some spa gifts of my own.  I...

When a Second Pregnancy Focuses on the Toddler

In our new series Pregnancy Diaries , we ask expecting women to jot down every pregnancy-related detail of their lives for a week. (Special thanks to New York mag and Refinery29 for the inspo.) Work-related conundrums, struggles with IVF, and a whole lot of nausea, ahead. For our eighth entry, we have a 33-year-old part-time publicist from Connecticut who’s 25 weeks along. She and her husband of almost eight years have a “spirited” two-and-a-half-year-old girl, and don’t know the sex of baby number two.  How long did it take you to conceive?  It took just a couple of months to conceive baby #2. My cycle has tended to fluctuate month-to-month since having my daughter, so it was a bit of a challenge to track accurately. We’ve been incredibly fortunate and have not experienced any fertility issues to-date. Any other details relevant to your pregnancy? Our daughter was born three weeks and one day early, and I gave birth less than three hours after my water broke. This is known as precipit...
