The Gentle Art of Poverty

I am an old man in his sixtieth year. I have entered that decade of life which destroys the last illusion and beyond which lies death, swift or lingering, actuarial or real. I am also poor, incontrovertibly, humiliatingly poor, for the first time in my life. My total annual income , from a modest pension ($1980) and the interest ($168.75) from an equally modest savings account , is 6 percent of what I earned in my prime-and less than two thirds of the property tax I once paid on a five-bedroom home with swimming pool in Westchester County, New York. I am divorced and living alone in an alien city of 800,000 strangers. My aging body betrays me day by day; the ground I am losing now I lose forever. So I perceived myself, at any rate, when the plane from a foreign country dropped me in San Diego one night seven months ago. Behind me stretched an aimless, six-year, expatriate trail through the South Seas, Asia, and Latin America that began when divorce and its inevitable byproducts-seco...

Bathroom Bills Stall Amid Shower Of Criticism

We may miss the nasty vulgarities that the pivoting Donald Trump is said to be leaving behind. Now we’re stuck with the bathroom bills — and Trump’s comment that people should “use the bathroom they feel is appropriate.” So: the mighty-handed Trump, whose wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command beats back Mexican rapists , Muslim terrorists, and black murderers, is — let’s not beat around the bysshe — shrinking like a shriveling shrinking thing before the NewYorkTimesie pushers of gender-neutral bathrooms and showers for high-school kids. Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair! The bathroom bills , which push back against this latest insanity, bring to mind Randall Jarrell ’s quip in “Pictures from an Institution”: “You have to see it not to believe it.” What astounds is that transgender people aren ’t just interested in bathrooms qua bathrooms (as they probably say in the tony gender-free aeries of progressive liberalism). What they want is to destroy convention itself. Not just ...

Looking for a Bed-and-Breakfast?

Natives know where to go for a real San Francisco experience : the city's neighborhoods. What better way to make family and friends comfortable than to have them stay close by in one of Noe Valley's guesthouses. While many local guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts have been hit by the current economic slump --and by the competition from a drop in downtown hotel prices --the good news is guests no longer have to book six months in advance and can sometimes negotiate a lower room rate . Still, most guesthouses report business is steady, at least on the weekends. In Noe Valley we are fortunate to have a mix of lodgings that serve a wide range of needs. You can find a cottage with handicapped access for grandparents, several places that welcome children, or a quiet room in a house, for a friend. In this survey, which updates our B&B roundups in the June 1997 and May 1999 issues, the Voice uncovered a variety of hospitality styles: a European- style tourist home , a fully furn...
