Baby Hair Care

Gambar
Quick Hair Tips Alexandra Grablewski Whether it's thin, thick, curly, or practically nonexistent, parents love to run their fingers through their baby's hair just for the pure pleasure of it. And seeing it sticking up in the morning or slick and wet in the bath is one of those wonderful little joys of parenthood. In fact, many moms put off baby's first haircut for as long as possible, because seeing those wispy little curls fall to the floor is often the first sign that babyhood is coming to an end. But eventually (like when your baby can't see through the hair in his eyes!) some locks have to go. And beyond haircuts, there's more to baby hair care -- even if your baby hardly has any. If your baby has no hair... Care tip: Shampoo twice a week to avoid cradle cap -- oily, flaky patches of skin on the scalp. Styling tip: Hats are a must to protect baby's head from the sun -- and a bonnet or baseball cap can help strangers tell a girl from a boy. If your bab...

The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies for Children

Gambar
Guest Author - Bonnie Sayers From the first moments that I became a Mother about eleven years ago I chose every magazine for parents of babies to subscribe to. I received an offer to purchase The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies for Children . This book is from the Editors of Prevention Magazine Health Books . The last 25 plus pages are an extensive Index to find help in treating Jellyfish stings to swimmer’s ear. The first eight pages are the Contents broken down by the letters of the Alphabet. Simply look under C to find Canker Sores and tips for taming the kid who is hooked on video games under V. I have Eczema and found strategies to stop the itching that work well for me also. When Nicholas learned of Chicken Pox from watching an episode of Arthur he insisted that the freckles on his body were indeed chicken pox. I flipped to page 85 to read some of the symptoms to try to explain what he should look for. Under A there are many sections that I have sought out time and again, lik...

In a wealthy Virginia suburb, their cars are their beds

Gambar
John Baird Jr., 47. (Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post) It’s almost bedtime. John Baird Jr., 47, smokes on the hood of his 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis sedan , his plaid sleeping bag neatly tucked in the trunk. Kathleen McDermott, 81, slouches in the driver’s seat of her 2002 Ford Focus station wagon . Two angel statuettes stare from her dashboard into clothes and clutter behind her. Scott Downey, 52, works a crossword puzzle on his phone inside a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country van that smells faintly like cats. Clothes hang on hooks in the back, and emergency supplies of ramen noodles and Vienna sausages sit out of plain view. They are in a Home Depot parking lot , largely invisible among the subdivisions and sprawl of Northern Virginia’s Fairfax County , the nation’s second-wealthiest community. Sleeping in their cars, they are homeless but sort of not, a subset of a population officially classified as “unsheltered” and slowly shrinking in these suburbs of Washington, even ...

Hammam Scrub Gave Me The Smoothest Skin of My Life

Gambar
I’ll be the first to admit that based on the number of times a week I say, “oh my god, this thing changed my life,” it would seem as though I’ve had approximately one-million life-altering revelations so far. But, if we’re being honest, I can say that I’ve truly only ever had one. And it wasn’t over the insanely good pizza I ate last week, or the airbrushed-looking foundation I just bought—it was the time I got my skin scrubbed at a Moroccan bath house , and it really, truly, completely changed my life. Or, at least, my skin. When I visited Morocco while studying abroad last spring, I got the chance to go to a hammam, a.k.a. a public bath house , and it was pretty much the most culturally different, eye-opening, and skin-softening experience I’ve ever had. Seriously—my skin felt like a newborn baby’s after being slathered in vaseline and kissed by a bunch of clouds. Think of a hammam like a spa, a public jacuzzi, and a steam room, all rolled into one, mixed with a bunch of nudity. Tho...
