Alternative Spring Breaks: Bronx-Bound | BU Today

Gambar
Helping children through Junior Achievement Alternative Spring Break ASB" /> This spring break, 12 BU students traveled to the Bronx, N.Y., to work with Junior Achievement , the world’s largest nonprofit established to educate children in grades K-12 about the importance of financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness. Photo courtesy of Claire Sutton (COM’14) Nearly 400 students volunteered in this year’s BU Community Service Center Alternative Spring Breaks program. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, ASB paired students with 37 organizations around the country involved in environmental, affordable housing and homelessness, children’s services, and animal welfare efforts. All week long, we are bringing you first-person accounts of some of those trips. When I was in high school, my image of college spring breaks was of students wasting away in a place similar to Margaritaville (nothing against Jimmy Buffett). I never imagined college students would choose to ...

Back to School: Know Your Bathroom Privacy and Religious Liberty Rights

Gambar
While Texas public school classes are going back in session, the legislature has left its special session without passing essential privacy protections for our schools. This failure to protect privacy leaves schoolchildren vulnerable to school district policies that allow men into girls’ showers, locker rooms, and bathrooms.  The lack of a statewide standard on privacy in government buildings and schools contributes to an emerging patchwork of inconsistent local rules – many of which were passed behind closed doors with no input from the taxpayers (as has been the case in Coppell ISD, Dripping Springs ISD , and Fort Worth ISD ). Without a doubt, liberal LGBT interest groups will see Speaker Joe Straus ’s and Representative Byron Cook ’s blocking of the privacy protection bill as a green light to pursue even more un-vetted, untested, and controversial school district policies that put our children in danger – and will race to do so before a second special session. Our Texas Valu...

Women Detained in Federal Immigrant Center Complain of Feeling Unsafe

Gambar
As men are moved into a federal immigrant detention center in Pennsylvania, mothers who usually make up the majority of its residents say they feel uncomfortable and unsafe.  By telephone from the Berks County Residential Center in Leesport, one detained immigrant mother repeated the word “fear” over and over. She said she was scared “that something is going to happen here,” and asked to speak anonymously, afraid of retaliation. The center, which provides lodging for  immigrant families as they await deportation, typically houses primarily mothers and children who have been denied asylum, with a few fathers with children sprinkled in. It is one of three family detention centers in the country. But after 10 families who had stayed long-term at the facility were deported in May, men and their children replaced them, said Karen Hoffmann, a legal advocate for immigrants at Berks.  Harvey the Hawk Rescued and in Recovery Gender ratios vary at the Berks County-run facility, which makes...

Valley Baptist offers tips for dealing with childhood sleep problems

HARLINGEN - Can I have a glass of water? I’m afraid of the dark. There’s a monster under my bed. Children can make up many excuses not to go to, or stay in bed. Some childhood sleep problems are caused by poor sleep habits , while others may be hereditary or symptoms of emotional difficulties. Fortunately, children typically outgrow sleep problems so they – and their parents – can get a good night’s rest. The amount of sleep children need gradually decreases as they mature. Newborn babies usually nap about 16 hours through the day and night, while teenagers need about nine hours of sleep per night. For many parents, getting their children to go to bed and stay there can be quite frustrating, but they can help put a stop to bedtime troubles by following these simple steps. • Stick to the same bedtime every night, even on weekends. • Turn off the television, video games and computer at least one hour before going to bed and start winding down with a consistent routine that includes br...

The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies for Children

Gambar
Guest Author - Bonnie Sayers From the first moments that I became a Mother about eleven years ago I chose every magazine for parents of babies to subscribe to. I received an offer to purchase The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies for Children . This book is from the Editors of Prevention Magazine Health Books . The last 25 plus pages are an extensive Index to find help in treating Jellyfish stings to swimmer’s ear. The first eight pages are the Contents broken down by the letters of the Alphabet. Simply look under C to find Canker Sores and tips for taming the kid who is hooked on video games under V. I have Eczema and found strategies to stop the itching that work well for me also. When Nicholas learned of Chicken Pox from watching an episode of Arthur he insisted that the freckles on his body were indeed chicken pox. I flipped to page 85 to read some of the symptoms to try to explain what he should look for. Under A there are many sections that I have sought out time and again, lik...

Transgender student drops part of landmark bathroom case

RICHMOND, Va. – Lawyers for transgender teen Gavin Grimm have set aside part of his case against the Gloucester County Public Schools . After spending years fighting all the way to the Supreme Court, Grimm’s lawyers filed to drop the appeal seeking an immediate end to the district's bathroom policy . This comes after judges with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond ruled that the 18-year-old may not be able to pursue the case anymore since he graduated high school in June. The ACLU said Grimm's decision now clears the way for them to litigate his case based on Title IX discrimination . Grimm was born a female, but has identified as male since his freshman year in high school. According to court documents, Grimm used the boys’ restrooms at the school for approximately seven weeks without incident. However, after some adults in the community complained, the Gloucester County School Board overruled its administrators and enacted a new policy prohibiting boys and g...

Student solves "transgender bathroom" problem in one step, not that anyone will listen

Larry covered the initial marching orders as they were handed down from the White House this week. With no consultation from either the legislative or judicial branches, Barack Obama told all of the schools in America that they needed to ignore established genetic science and age old standards of privacy to allow students to pick their own gender and use whichever bathrooms, locker rooms and showers they feel best suit them. Failing to do so would be met with cutting off their federal education funding regardless of need or scholastic performance. Needless to say, plenty of school districts were less than thrilled. One school system in Texas immediately informed the White House that the mandate was heading directly into the trash. “I got news for President Barack Obama ,” Port Neches-Groves (Texas) Superintendent Rodney Cavness told 12News . “He ain’t my President and he can’t tell me what to do. That letter is going straight to the paper shredder . I have 5 daughters myself and I...

He broke my big toe, ate the curtains and don't even ask what he did to the children's soft toys. But I couldn't help falling in love with the world's naughtiest sausage dog

This was getting ridiculous. How could something so tiny make such a noise for so many hours? According to my wife, Emma, this was ‘sleep-training’ and she was refusing to go downstairs to deal with it. But I couldn’t take it any longer. The last time I’d looked at my bedside clock, it was four in the morning, and I couldn’t say how much time had passed since then as I’d placed a pillow over my head in a bid to block out the noise. For the first half of the night, we’d had a steady stream of visits and complaints from our four children. The younger two, Frank and Honey, eight and six, were the first to shuffle in, asking if they could play on their Nintendo DS consoles until the puppy decided to call it a night. Four Castaways Make a Family

“I hate to see them get bounced home to home,” the foster mother said, passing me my first child. I held her in my lap, paralyzed. I had brought a toy phone. When she grinned and reached for it, our eyes met, and a social worker took a photo of the moment. Later I wrote on the back: “The first time I saw you.” I didn’t understand why there wasn’t a stampede of parents to adopt her. That I would get the honor made me tremble. I was so in love I could not say her name to myself, even in a whisper, lest I be denied the joy: Luppi Milov. I thought it was the most euphonious name I had ever heard. My daughter, my love. As far as I knew, I was capable of getting pregnant. I just didn’t want to. There were half a million children in foster care in need of an adoptive parent. And I wanted children, so this made perfect sense to me. It didn’t make perfect sense to my friends. “Aren’t you afraid?” they asked. No, I wasn’t. I had grown up with poverty, abuse and molestation. If my daughter wasn...
