Summer Infant Bath Tub Recall: Fall and Drowning Hazard

Gambar
About 86,000 battery- operated whirlpool baby baths are being recalled, following nearly 100 consumer complaints that suggest the fabric safety slings may detach from the tub while in use, posing a drowning risk and fall hazard.  The Lil’ Luxuries Whirlpool, Bubbling Spa & Shower infant bath recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on October 6, after the manufacturer received at least 91 reports of problems with the safety slings, which have resulted in at least 11 head injuries from falls. The recalled baby bath tubs are designed to bathe infants from birth to two years old, by setting the child in a fabric sling that is suspended from a white plastic frame around the top of the tub. The recall was initiated after reports of the slings detaching from the plastic attachment frame , allowing the child to fall into the side walls of the tub and underwater. Further analysis of the fall incidents found the headrest area of the fabric sling did...

Safety-Friendly Bathroom Remodels at Every Price

A safe bathroom doesn 't have to be a boring bathroom. Searching for safety-friendly updates can become a time-consuming task, so we' ve helped narrow it down. See our recommendations below on some key amenities that could make a huge difference in bathroom safety and function for you and your loved ones. Hand Held Sprayer This type of showerhead allows you to choose a desired height while allowing flexibility and mobility in the shower. The hand-held sprayer allows you to move the water around, rather than turning their bodies in the shower, which can lead to dizziness. This invaluable function also makes showering while seated easier, and makes cleaning the shower a less cumbersome task. Linear Drains A linear drain is an American with Disabilities Act (ADA)- compliant shower feature to consider. This allows a more level slope, which makes it easier to use a wheelchair or shower chair. By eliminated the protruding metal pieces of more traditional drains, you can lower the...

Randomised controlled trial of thermostatic mixer valves in reducing bath hot tap water temperature in families with young children in social housing

Gambar
Introduction Approximately 2000 emergency department attendances and 500 hospital admissions following bath water scalds to children occur in the UK each year.1 Admissions mostly occur in children aged under 5 years, often involving prolonged inpatient stays , transfer to a specialist hospital or burns unit.1 The cost of treating a severe scald has been estimated at £250<TS, thin space here>000.1 Longer- term effects include disability , disfigurement or psychological harm. What is already known on this topic ▶ Hot bath water scalds are an important public health problem ; their incidence has not declined over recent years. ▶ Thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) have the potential to reduce scald risk but there have been no randomised controlled trials assessing their effectiveness and acceptability to families. What this study adds ▶ TMVs and educational leaflets are effective in reducing bath hot tap water temperature in the short and longer term and are acceptable to famil...

Shattered! The danger hanging in your bathroom

Gambar
I had just finished showering and turned off the water. Soaking wet, I did what millions of Americans do every day -- I reached for my snazzy sliding glass shower door . Seconds later, glass was raining down on me. The door had failed somehow and exploded into a million little pieces. The sound was hideous, something between nails on a chalkboard and a torrential downpour. Only this didn't make me wet, it made me bloody. This was the grisly scene in my bathroom after a shower door exploded on me while I showered. I bled substantially from a wound on my right foot and had to walk on glass to get out. Glass shower doors are a substantial upgrade from old, mold- magnet plastic shower curtains found in many older homes. They look great. They let ambient light into the shower and make the bathroom look larger. If you have fancy tile rimming your tub, they show that off. The aesthetics come with a cost however, as I recently learned the hard way: Glass shower and tub enclosures ca...

Gambar
Designers: Robert Buechler, Aaron Carlson and Lenny Slutsky Supervising Professor:  Larry Bohs INTRODUCTION Our client, an 8-year-old boy with Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR) Syndrome, could not bathe independently because his arms are weak and very short. The Bath Chair has a PVC frame and mesh bath sponges as washing surfaces. A shower caddy is mounted to a safety railing on the right side of the chair, and showerheads attach to the top of the chair and to a safety railing on the left side. The client controls water flow for each showerhead using two push-button valves on a diverter. Using the chair, the client can now bathe independently. SUMMARY OF IMPACT The client previously needed help from his parents to bathe, but now can bathe by himself.  His mother commented, “This is a huge step for (him) in terms of personal care for himself.  … I can’t put into words the joy it makes me feel seeing him excited about gaining this independence.” TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION The frame of t...
