The Albright-Knox started with a vision for the Freedom Wall months ago and now four local artists are bringing it to life. The artists are John Baker, Julia Bottoms-Douglas, Chuck Tingley, and Edreys Wajed. The individuals involved in the project told News 4 there is no way to tell the history of civil rights through these portraits alone but they hope it will start a conversation and create an opportunity to educate the public. The mural is being painted on the NFTA Cold Springs Bus Depot wall , at the corner of Michigan Ave. and E. Ferry St. Twenty-eight civil rights leaders will be depicted, including Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr . There will also be leaders who made a mark on Buffalo, including Dr. Lydia T. Ten years ago, a driver ran a stop sign as Jim McIlroy rode into the intersection on his motorcycle. Serious injuries left McIlroy paralyzed from the chest down. But, after spending some time in a nursing home, he returned to his home near Bethel, Maine. McIlroy does most of his own cooking since Maine’s Medicaid program paid for a stovetop that he can roll his wheelchair underneath to reach the food-prep area. His new kitchen sink has the same feature. Wheelchair- friendly wood flooring has replaced McIlroy’s wall-to-wall carpeting. The alterations plus a personal care aide — all paid for by Medicaid — enable McIlroy to stay in his house that he and his wife, who has since died, “worked really hard to own,” he said. The arrangement also saves Medicaid roughly two-thirds of what it would cost if he lived in a nursing home. McIlroy depends on the federal- state program ’s growing support of home- based care services — along with 2 million elderly or disabled Americans who rely on...

Today I’m sharing how to install tile flush with hardwood floors, like I did in my bathroom.  Can you believe the Jack and Jill bathroom finally has floors?  I’m making slow but steady progress.  The vanity area of the bathroom has a combination of hardwood and tile.  The room that contains the shower and toilet is all tile but it butts up to the wood in the other room.   Install Tile Flush with Hardwood Floors" /> I wanted the tile to be flush with the hardwood floors so I installed the tile on LATICRETE STRATA_MAT™ XT   .    It helps create an even transition between typical ¼” to 3/8″ thick tile and 3/4″thick hardwood flooring.  The STRATA_MAT XT replaces 1/4″ thick cement board — it’s much lighter, easier to cut and installs with just mortar (no screws required). install tile flush with hardwood floor" /> Installing STRATA_MAT XT I cut a piece of STRATA_MAT XT to fit in the powder room.  Then I test fit that piece and cut out the vent and toilet drain hole .  I...

In our new series Pregnancy Diaries , we ask expecting women to jot down every pregnancy-related detail of their lives for a week. (Special thanks to New York mag and Refinery29 for the inspo.) Work-related conundrums, struggles with IVF, and a whole lot of nausea, ahead. For our eighth entry, we have a 33-year-old part-time publicist from Connecticut who’s 25 weeks along. She and her husband of almost eight years have a “spirited” two-and-a-half-year-old girl, and don’t know the sex of baby number two.  How long did it take you to conceive?  It took just a couple of months to conceive baby #2. My cycle has tended to fluctuate month-to-month since having my daughter, so it was a bit of a challenge to track accurately. We’ve been incredibly fortunate and have not experienced any fertility issues to-date. Any other details relevant to your pregnancy? Our daughter was born three weeks and one day early, and I gave birth less than three hours after my water broke. This is known as precipit...
