Saving Money and Saving the Environment

Gambar
One great thing about frugal living is that being frugal tends to lower your impact on the environment. In honor of Earth Day, we have collected some money saving tips and articles that are also good for the environment. Ride A Bike Get a bicycle. Goodwill stores often have nice used ones for $10 or so. Make sure it's the right size for you, it's comfortable and you know how everything on it works. Then put reflectors on it, a basket on the front and/or back, get a lightweight lock, and go for it. Optional: light, and rear-view mirror on handlebars. And please always wear bright-colored clothes when riding, or at least tie a bright scarf on the back. Thrifty, green people know how to avoid accidents. By Jantoo Cloth Bags For Groceries A few stores in my area, like Fred Meyer, have been selling sturdy reusable cloth totes to use instead of paper or plastic bags. They have nice handles, sit flat and are good for the environment. So I always remember t...

Running Doc’s tips for post-marathon recovery

Dear Running Doc : I am 29 years old and run three marathons a year. After I run a marathon my muscles hurt for a week. I see recovery drinks in the store but never know which one to buy. After each race, I drink a sports drink, get a massage and then go home and take a hot shower. Can you give me some tips so I don’t hurt so much? Jodi N., Chicago Thanks for the question, Jodi. I bet many people are in the same boat after marathons, so let’s go through some recovery tips. Post- event muscle soreness is due to small micro tears of soft tissue after a long run. Follow these tips to speed healing and reduce inflammation at the tear site. 1. Do not take a hot shower. Inflammation is like butter boiling in a pan. If you turn the heat up it spatters. Try to take a bath or shower in as cool water as you can handle. This will reduce inflammation. 2. Drinking a recovery drink is a good idea. You want to replenish sug...

Millennials: This Is Why You Fail

Gambar
Good job… at ruining America. I generally try to defend Millennials in these pages. They might seem like texting-obsessed kids, but we need to cut them some slack. Because they had the American economy pulled out from under them just as they tried to start their adult lives. You just wait, when these guys are 40, they’ll be telling their kids stories of the “Great Recession” and how patience and frugality are chief virtues. They might be telling their kids those stories in Chinese, but still. But we do have our occasional disagreements. I think the special snowflake syndrome plagues this generation; they’re so obsessed with their own social- media fueled individuality that they tend to think things like statistics don’t apply to them. Part of that is being young; part of that is being dumb. And part of that is that Millennials, as a group, seem to need compliments in order to function like normal humans. They want you to LIKE THEIR STATUS and retweet their banter with an inane “lol....

Rough Hands & Fine Threads? Some Tips!

Gambar
It’s winter here in Kansas. It’s biting cold out, the heat is on, the air is dry. I don’t have a maid and I haven’t invented a magic sink, so the dishes still need washing every day! My hands just want to be rough and scratchy this time of year. Rough and scratchy hands are a frustrating inconvenience when you’re working with fine embroidery threads – any time of year! You know how it is: you’re stitching along pretty happily with a brand new thread, when disaster strikes! Your thread snags on, of all things, your thumb! That curséd dry scratchy patch on the side of your thumb ! Grrrrr! The plies of the thread bunch up, the fibers get hairy, you have to trim the thread and start anew. I know I’m not the only one with this problem, because inevitably, in the winter, I get a lot of inquiries about how to work with fine embroidery threads when your hands are rough. Over the years, I’ve tried myriad solutions for this problem. Today, I’ll chat about what works for me, and then ask yo...

The Waddle's Not So Cute Anymore

It's the final countdown -- fast approaching single -digit weeks -- before you get to meet your baby and coo over those tiny fingers and toes. Unfortunately, tiny isn't the word that comes to mind these days. The homestretch can be, well, a stretch. Itchy bellies, achy backs, swollen ankles, hemorrhoids -- you name the annoyance, and some expectant mom probably feels it. The real remedy, of course, is childbirth. But since that option is still a bit premature, we asked an obstetrician, a midwife, and a family practitioner to share their best trade secrets for surviving the common aches and pains of the third trimester. Our experts: Owen Montgomery, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia; Stephanie Lowell, a certified nurse midwife in Phoenix, Ariz.; and. Bruce Bagley, MD, a family-practice physician in Latham, N.Y., and former president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Make sure to talk...

The Elizabeths: Elemental Historians

Gambar
by Carla Nappi CONJECTURES #4 For the most part, working professional historians bring to their sources a fundamentally forensic sensibility: they tend to treat their archival scraps like so many clues , which, rightly read, permit the reconstruction of events and persons. There is much to be said for this program, which works pretty well. But it does have its limits. For instance, certain old tidbits afford a queer intimacy with the past that seems to exceed their evidentiary utility. A death mask may display, trapped in white plaster, a single hair once belonging to the human whose visage we contemplate. The hair is of severely limited utility to a practicing historian, yet it rather seethes with an urgent presencing of the past — and that clearly has something to do with the work of history. So what’s to be done? In this excerpt from a larger project, the imaginative historian of Chinese science Carla Nappi permits a dreamscape to rise from four archival fragments — four obliqu...

The Gentle Art of Poverty

I am an old man in his sixtieth year. I have entered that decade of life which destroys the last illusion and beyond which lies death, swift or lingering, actuarial or real. I am also poor, incontrovertibly, humiliatingly poor, for the first time in my life. My total annual income , from a modest pension ($1980) and the interest ($168.75) from an equally modest savings account , is 6 percent of what I earned in my prime-and less than two thirds of the property tax I once paid on a five-bedroom home with swimming pool in Westchester County, New York. I am divorced and living alone in an alien city of 800,000 strangers. My aging body betrays me day by day; the ground I am losing now I lose forever. So I perceived myself, at any rate, when the plane from a foreign country dropped me in San Diego one night seven months ago. Behind me stretched an aimless, six-year, expatriate trail through the South Seas, Asia, and Latin America that began when divorce and its inevitable byproducts-seco...
