(Photo: University Housing ) Bright, spacious and comfortable are just a few ways to describe the two new residence halls Florida State University will open this fall — providing contemporary on- campus housing opportunities for more than 900 students. The two new halls, Magnolia and Azalea, complete a quad of four new residence halls , joining Dorman and Deviney halls, which opened in 2015. The four halls face each other, creating an open courtyard area with benches and porch swings where students can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The courtyard’s pathways also provide students with a convenient route to class. “The level of quality and attention to detail in these new residence halls really shows Florida State ’s dedication to providing students with superior places to live,” said Shannon Staten, FSU’s executive director of university h...

Today, there's a growing recognition that a master suite can be an open, free- flowing retreat that maximizes a great outlook. This suite is in a contemporary beachfront house designed by architect Dan Brunn of Dan Brunn Architecture . Not surprisingly, the views were a key consideration. So, too, was natural light – the interior needed to be light and airy, yet screened from neighboring properties. Protecting the owners' photograph collection from direct sunlight was also a priority. Taking an unexpected approach to the design, the architect opened up the bathroom with large sliding doors on two sides. One side, featuring a freestanding Ag...

Extension of elegance reflects modern manners in Newtown

Gambar
THERE are two worlds represented in this sympathetic Newtown renovation , but they don’t collide. The original four- bedroom house represents a rich era in architecture in this blue ribbon neighbourhood , shown through its detailed weatherboard and brick homes. The timber detailing on the facade and a rare corner stained glass bay window provides a glimpse into yesteryear. Its credentials are confirmed inside, where high ceilings are lined with timber, creating a spacious aura throughout the original part of the home. It’s a solid built house that blocks the noise from the cusp of the city. 1 Roebuck St, Newtown. Three bedrooms are at the front. Each has split-system airconditioning, of which there are seven units in the house. Two bedrooms have enormous built-in wardrobes, while the third could double as a study, with the bay window and desk by the open fireplace. A T- shaped passageway connects the room, in the original part of the house, with a renovated bathroom, including a d...

Looking for a Bed-and-Breakfast?

Natives know where to go for a real San Francisco experience : the city's neighborhoods. What better way to make family and friends comfortable than to have them stay close by in one of Noe Valley's guesthouses. While many local guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts have been hit by the current economic slump --and by the competition from a drop in downtown hotel prices --the good news is guests no longer have to book six months in advance and can sometimes negotiate a lower room rate . Still, most guesthouses report business is steady, at least on the weekends. In Noe Valley we are fortunate to have a mix of lodgings that serve a wide range of needs. You can find a cottage with handicapped access for grandparents, several places that welcome children, or a quiet room in a house, for a friend. In this survey, which updates our B&B roundups in the June 1997 and May 1999 issues, the Voice uncovered a variety of hospitality styles: a European- style tourist home , a fully furn...
