The Gentle Art of Poverty

I am an old man in his sixtieth year. I have entered that decade of life which destroys the last illusion and beyond which lies death, swift or lingering, actuarial or real. I am also poor, incontrovertibly, humiliatingly poor, for the first time in my life. My total annual income , from a modest pension ($1980) and the interest ($168.75) from an equally modest savings account , is 6 percent of what I earned in my prime-and less than two thirds of the property tax I once paid on a five-bedroom home with swimming pool in Westchester County, New York. I am divorced and living alone in an alien city of 800,000 strangers. My aging body betrays me day by day; the ground I am losing now I lose forever. So I perceived myself, at any rate, when the plane from a foreign country dropped me in San Diego one night seven months ago. Behind me stretched an aimless, six-year, expatriate trail through the South Seas, Asia, and Latin America that began when divorce and its inevitable byproducts-seco...

The Grand Luxe Spa, Swiss Style

In its five-starred four stories, there are 216 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, a kindergarten and a games room. The two-floor 5,500-square-meter spa, opened in 1992, is a state-of-the-art health, fitness and beauty center, part white-walled clinic, part sports complex , part pleasure palace . Use of the fitness and gymnastics rooms costs $14. (Local residents can join for $1,643 a year.) Guests create their own wellness programs. Some options: Clarins bust treatment , anti- aging facial care for both men and women, podiatry service, indoor tennis and putting green and driving range, the cuisine minceur diet , bio-sauna with light therapy, utter quiet in the relaxation room. The indoor pool, kept at about 82 degrees, is a Roman vision of hedonism with blue pillars, fulminating whirlpools, a waterfall and view of the rocky, tree-covered Harder. Doing laps here is not a chore. Interlaken itself -- a town of 15,000 ''between the two lakes'' on the Bodeli plain -- ...

The Waddle's Not So Cute Anymore

It's the final countdown -- fast approaching single -digit weeks -- before you get to meet your baby and coo over those tiny fingers and toes. Unfortunately, tiny isn't the word that comes to mind these days. The homestretch can be, well, a stretch. Itchy bellies, achy backs, swollen ankles, hemorrhoids -- you name the annoyance, and some expectant mom probably feels it. The real remedy, of course, is childbirth. But since that option is still a bit premature, we asked an obstetrician, a midwife, and a family practitioner to share their best trade secrets for surviving the common aches and pains of the third trimester. Our experts: Owen Montgomery, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia; Stephanie Lowell, a certified nurse midwife in Phoenix, Ariz.; and. Bruce Bagley, MD, a family-practice physician in Latham, N.Y., and former president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Make sure to talk...

MORE: 9 Bad Habits That Make Your Winter Skin So Much Worse Bolster Your Barrier The skin on the hands acts like a barrier to keep moisture in, says Monica Halem, MD. If this barrier is disrupted by extreme weather conditions , sun exposure, dry air, or certain disease processes, the result can be very dry, itchy, red, cracked, and sore hands. To combat this, reestablish the skin barrier on your hands. “The skin barrier is made of three key elements—ceremide, cholesterol, and triglyceride,” Halem says. There are several creams and lotions on the market that contain all three ingredients; check the label to make sure all three are listed. “And keep in mind that a cream (oil-water mix) is much richer than a lotion (water-oil mix), and better to use for dry hands,” she says. Don't Go Near The Water Although you were probably taught to wash your hands often throughout the day, if you have chapped hands, water is not your friend. In fact, water is the worst influence for chapped hands....
