(Photo: University Housing ) Bright, spacious and comfortable are just a few ways to describe the two new residence halls Florida State University will open this fall — providing contemporary on- campus housing opportunities for more than 900 students. The two new halls, Magnolia and Azalea, complete a quad of four new residence halls , joining Dorman and Deviney halls, which opened in 2015. The four halls face each other, creating an open courtyard area with benches and porch swings where students can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The courtyard’s pathways also provide students with a convenient route to class. “The level of quality and attention to detail in these new residence halls really shows Florida State ’s dedication to providing students with superior places to live,” said Shannon Staten, FSU’s executive director of university h...

Dorm room decorators say to choose a focal point | Free

When Young Huh left for college in the 1980s, she brought “one giant poster of The Cure, bedding from the local bed-and-bath store and maybe some desk accessories.” Like so many Gen-Xers, her one creative touch was asking a supermarket for leftover milk crates to use as bookshelves. Now an interior designer , she has helped her own children decorate their dorm rooms, and she’s amazed at the design expectations among college students . “It’s a level of decorating that did not even exist in my world view when I was in school,” Huh says. Today, there are lots of products “that cater entirely to the college crowd,” she says. Interior designer Jon Call sees the same phenomenon: While his main business is designing luxury homes in Manhattan, he also gets asked to design college living spaces . “This new generation has grown up under the influence of home magazines, HGTV and the virtues of ‘ democratic design .’ They understand the value of creating unique spaces for themselves,” he say...

Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, ASB paired students with 37 organizations around the country involved in environmental, affordable housing and homelessness, children’s services, and animal welfare efforts. All week long, we are bringing you first-person accounts of some of those trips. When I was in high school, my image of college spring breaks was of students wasting away in a place similar to Margaritaville (nothing against Jimmy Buffett). I never imagined college students would choose to ...

Everything You Need to Survive the Communal Bathroom

Gambar
We all know that moving into a college dorm means sharing your room with a brand new roommate. Pretty cool, right? But we can’t forget about that other space you’ll have to start sharing …One that maybe isn’t  so exciting. That’s right — we’re talking about the communal bathroom. Take a look at what you’ll need to survive this space. A robe. A robe is  much more comfortable than making the run from your room to the showers in just a towel. Imagine trying to hold up a towel while you’re also hauling your shower caddy down the hall. Or, even worse, imagine the fire alarm goes off! Trust us…A robe is a must. Cheap flip flops. While the bathrooms are cleaned regularly, we still doubt you’ll want to walk across those floors and showers barefoot. A simple cheap pair of plastic flip flops will do the trick — nothing fancy! A few towels. College gets busy. Before you know it, your hamper is overflowing and it’s been weeks since you’ve done your laundry. Make sure you have quite a few towe...

Today's classroom asks about the usefulness of those popular caffeinated energy shots ; the various Internet myths about sunscreen products; the meaning of the word "information" when thermodynamics are invoked to prove creationism; companies that claim to offer the secrets of suppressed miracle cures for cancer; and whether drinking hot water from the tap is as risky as some rumors say it is. Let's get started with energy shots, from a young man in southern California: Hi, Mr. Dunning. What's your take on those 5- Hour Energy Shots , and how they affect the u...

Student solves "transgender bathroom" problem in one step, not that anyone will listen

Larry covered the initial marching orders as they were handed down from the White House this week. With no consultation from either the legislative or judicial branches, Barack Obama told all of the schools in America that they needed to ignore established genetic science and age old standards of privacy to allow students to pick their own gender and use whichever bathrooms, locker rooms and showers they feel best suit them. Failing to do so would be met with cutting off their federal education funding regardless of need or scholastic performance. Needless to say, plenty of school districts were less than thrilled. One school system in Texas immediately informed the White House that the mandate was heading directly into the trash. “I got news for President Barack Obama ,” Port Neches-Groves (Texas) Superintendent Rodney Cavness told 12News . “He ain’t my President and he can’t tell me what to do. That letter is going straight to the paper shredder . I have 5 daughters myself and I...
