Eco-Friendly Farmhouse Makeover

Gambar
Built in the late 1980s, this Vermont house was burdened by drafts and energy-guzzling appliances. The only "green" was growing on the surrounding 180 acres of countryside. To reach the green expectations of its homeowners, the farmhouse underwent a three-phase renovation while keeping its original footprint. This created a subtle exterior transformation . New galvanized metal roofing in two colors and a cool color palette freshen the look. Airtight insulation, efficient geothermal heating and cooling, and the new metal roofing altered the structure. Additions of efficient metal-clad windows and insulated doors had equal influence on the home's style. Eco-Friendly Remodeling Mudroom Makeover Just inside the front door, the mudroom's mix of open shelving and pullouts manages the gear and mess that accompany country living . Family and guests have a bench to sit on while lacing up their shoes. Throw pillows keep the sunny seat a welcoming scene. Hooks opposite of t...

How clean is your shower?

What could be more refreshing than a quick shower after a long run, or a warm shower on a really cold night? But you are not the only living thing that likes your shower - germs do too. The warm, moist and dark conditions in the shower make it a germ danger zone . The germs that live in clogged drains may be washed up to the surface when the shower is used and disease might spread. Unclean taps might also spread cold and flu bacteria. The shower curtain can also be germ-ridden, especially since it stays moist when it's not opened and aired. Apart from the bacteria that may lurk in the drainpipes and on the taps of showers, several disease-causing fungi and viruses can be present on shower floors. Athlete's foot (Tenis pedis) and Plantar's warts are frequently spread in this way. And although mildew isn't necessarily a health hazard, moulds may actually ruin your shower curtains. Cleaning the shower This task should not take long, but should be done regularly. I...

(Photo: University Housing ) Bright, spacious and comfortable are just a few ways to describe the two new residence halls Florida State University will open this fall — providing contemporary on- campus housing opportunities for more than 900 students. The two new halls, Magnolia and Azalea, complete a quad of four new residence halls , joining Dorman and Deviney halls, which opened in 2015. The four halls face each other, creating an open courtyard area with benches and porch swings where students can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The courtyard’s pathways also provide students with a convenient route to class. “The level of quality and attention to detail in these new residence halls really shows Florida State ’s dedication to providing students with superior places to live,” said Shannon Staten, FSU’s executive director of university h...

Dressed To Impress: Stylish Window Treatments

Gambar
Window treatments have been MIA of late, but they’re starting to make their return. Chrissie Jeffery, creative director at textiles shop No Chintz, gives us her expert advice on choosing window treatments that will frame your windows nicely and add polished style to your home too. Photographer: Armelle Habib Stylist: Julia Green   PLANTATION SHUTTERS “These are less window furnishings and more an architectural feature,” says Chrissie Jeffrey of No Chintz. Shutters are chic and smart, and allow light and air in while maintaining privacy. They’re good in situations where curtains might not fare so well, such as bathroom windows. Consider using them in a boy’s room, if a fabric option isn ’t the right fit, or to disguise an ugly outlook. “Shutters let in a lot of light, so if you wanted to soften the brightness you’d be better going for a translucent roller blind ,” advises Chrissie. “ Shutters don ’t provide full block out for sleeping, but are good light filters .” Shutters are adju...

Use curtain panels instead of a shower curtain when you have a window in a tub

Gambar
Here’s an idea that I love: When you have a window in a bathtub or shower, and the window is your main source of natural light in the bathroom, consider using curtain panels that hang to the right and left instead of a shower curtain that when open hangs to just one side. This idea came to me from Clive — who did this in his bathroom. It looks so good in this room — the classic 5′ x 8′-ish bathroom with the tub at the end. As you can see, splitting the panels allows for more of the window to show and to let natural light in. I’m guessing his “ shower curtain ” panels are made from barkcloth. These look so nice framing that tub and that window. And in the case of this bathroom and its layout, when you need to keep the curtain open to see the window, the symmetry is so much more pleasing than having a single panel pushed against the wall one side or another. Pinch pleat them or french pleat them at the top maybe even? A universe of fabric choices if you split your shower curtain into...

Your Best Options When Choosing A Bathroom Door Type

Gambar
Bathroom doors are often overlooked when, in fact, they actually play a very important role in the room’s interior design and the ambiance created inside . Because this is a utilitarian space, the focus in mainly on functionality and everything that’s decorative occupies a secondary position. The door combines the two categories, its size and function allowing to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing or stimulating in some way. Below you can find a short description for a series of door types we find suitable for bathrooms. Charming barn doors View in gallery Sliding barn doors can make any space feel welcoming and cozy and this includes the bathroom. My Bathroom Renovation | Curbly

Gambar
We recently completed a bathroom renovation and we learned a lot in the process.  Just to give you a little background on the project, my husband and I hired an architecht last fall to help us with renovating our home.  We knew for sure we wanted to replace windows but wanted to ensure we weren't wasting money on new windows in parts of the house we may change later.  So we gave him our entire wish list and before we knew it the project took on a life of its own.  So after three months of design meetings we received gorgeous plans of our dream house.  Then we learned it was going to cost much more then we were willing to spend.  So we decided to stage the renovation in three parts.  The first part was completed this past summer which included all new windows (requiring several walls to be rebuilt), a front portico and door, replacement of a decaying second story deck, opening up our living room and sunroom to make one big room, interior and exterior paint and a redo of our master ...
