Tile is commonly used on foyer, bathroom, laundry and kitchen floors, shower walls and fancier backsplashes in American homes.   If you lived somewhere else in the world —  like Europe, for example —  you’d probably have much more of it in your house. Tile makers want us to see the greater possibilities here, too, and so they sponsor visits by American architects, interior designers and journalists to their major trade shows . Cersaie, held in Italy every September, is one of those shows. Organized by the country’s ceramic trade association , it brings 100,000 attendees to Bologna to ogle acres of tile and buy boatloads (literally) of it for their projects around the world. TRUSS SYSTEM UNDERGIRDS MONUMENTAL STAIR Structure becomes art at a Massachusetts college library To invite exploration of its new academic library, Salem (Mass.) State University selected a light-filled and airy design. The site and program called for deep floor plates , so the Building Team devised a dramatic open staircase as a central feature to help break up the density. The engineering solution consists of a truss that supports the whole stair, with each step created from a triangular box beam that hangs off the truss. Celebrating its fourth year, Design and Construction Week is trading in the bright lights of Las Vegas for the bustling hub of the Sunshine State – Orlando, FL. For three days this month, the halls of the Orange County Convention Center will host some 80,000+ design and residential construction professionals and more than 2,100 exhibitors at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show and the International Builders’ Show. KBIS and IBS, hosted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association and the National Association of Home Builders, respectively, are expected to fill more than 900,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space with a wide array of products, demonstrations, live presentations and more.
