Everyday Cheapskate: The wonders of Epsom salt

I can recall vividly — and count on one hand — the migraine headaches I’ve had in my life, all of which were before age 10. Once I turned double digits , I outgrew them ... until a couple of months ago. With no warning at all, there I was back to my 8-year-old self, flat on my back with a raging migraine. Why now, after all these years? In reading up on the latest findings, I discovered how important magnesium is to our overall health. Turns out that 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from magnesium deficiency causing all kinds of health issues, one of them being migraine headaches. And here’s the problem with that: Magnesium supplements are not necessarily the answer because it is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I read how Epsom salt is rich in magnesium, which just happens to be easily absorbed through the skin — as in soaking in it in a nice warm bath . You can be sure Epsom salt soaks are now part of my ro...

All photos coutesy of Mandarin Oriental. Heading to the spa? It should be a refreshing experience. You shouldn’t feel like you’re trapped in a dark cave. We get that it’s one way  to escape and relax, but you want to feel rejuvenated too. Plus, dim lighting and dark corners sound more like elements of a scary movie than a spa day. So we need light. Gloves or no gloves? Hand care after gardening

Gambar
Protecting a gardener’s hands: Your advice… Sometimes a post on our Flea Market Gardening Facebook page just strikes a chord with everyone.  This one did and the result is many fine tips for caring for our hands after gardening.  After all we still want to have soft hands…  Where do you stand on wearing gloves ? Awful hands! “My hands! I’m working them to the bone, and today THIS is what they feel like! Dirt under my fingernails just like when I was a kid! I pick up cement stepping stones to move them and feel the rough surface tear at my skin. What really gets me is the rough SIDES of my fingers that have tiny cracks. I should wear gloves more, I know, but I need someone to sternly tell me to do so! 🙂  What do you all do to care for your hands after gardening? ~~ Sue What you said: Deborah L. Cutter- Well, like you, I don’t like to wear gloves. I make sure I have a fingernail brush to get the dirt from under the nails when done and lots of lotion! Emily Diaz – The Satin hands sys...

To Henna, or not to Henna? Natural Hair Coloring without the use of Chemicals

Gambar
I have been coloring my hair pretty regularly since I was about 21, maybe a bit younger. I am 27 now. So that’s at least 6 years of chemically treating my hair. I really don’t need  to color my hair, I don’t have any grays, and based off of other family members, I don’t think I will start to get any until I’m close to age 50. My dad really isn’t very gray at age 51, and I still don’t think my mom is at age 50. Crazy, right? As a makeup artist, I have always had a love for the art that comes with hair color and makeup. For myself, I really have never done much to my hair besides darken it for a richer color. Highlights never seem to flatter me, and I would get bored with my natural medium-brown color, so darkening it was always my preference. The problem with color is that it is really hard to stop coloring your hair once you start. After a few weeks the color fades, and you are left with hair lighter than when you started. It’s really a trap, and best to be avoided for as long as poss...
