Living With Ichthyosis | HealDove

What Is Ichthyosis? For those who don't know what Ichthyosis is, I will begin this article with a definition from FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types ): "Ichthyosis is a family of genetic skin disorders characterized by dry, scaling skin that may be thickened or very thin. The prefix "ichthy" is taken from the Greek root for the word fish. Each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of ichthyosis. Ichthyosis affects people of all ages, races and gender. The disease usually presents at birth, or within the first year, and continues to affect the patient throughout their lifetime." I myself was diagnosed when I was 6 years old, and as annoying as it is being compared to a snake, fish, or any other creepy amphibious being, that is the right term to describe it. That aside, Ichthyosis—even mild types like Ichthyosis Vulgaris—are hard to manage and control. I am going to tell you how I manage my Ichthyosis and hope that it helps o...

13 Tips for Successful Baby Travel

Gambar
Over the past 3 years we’ve learned a lot about what makes or breaks a trip with an infant. We’ve also learned that traveling with one baby is very different than traveling with two (shocking, I know). Let’s just say, I’ve gained a huge respect for those brave families that travel with 3 or 4 little ones. To you, I tip my hat. Last week, I received a message from a nervous mother about to take her infant on a flight for the very first time. I vividly remember feeling the same anxiety before our first few trips with Braydon (our first born). In preparation for her trip, she asked me to share my most useful baby travel tips . I sent her the link to our other blog Tips for Baby Travel  and later realized we haven’t written a detailed “ baby travel tips ” article on this site. We get asked this question quite often, so I thought it was about time we wrote a post dedicated to baby travel. We’ ve intentionally limited the amount of baby posts we publish on this site because we know a lot o...

Strange and beautiful.

I don’t know if it’s the planets or the meds or the darkness of winter, but this week I’ve been a bit down in the hole and I suspect I’m not the only one.  Then I heard this song that I’ve loved and forgotten and it saved me a little bit.  Little things save me from myself all the time.  Sometimes it’s music, and sometimes it’s words from writers who’ve been dead for years, and sometimes it’s you. [embedded content] If you’re sad or lonely or feeling like you’re one of the misfit toys, know that you are part of us.  And remember that those misfit toys were always far more interesting than the normal ones. Tell someone that you love them, or that they’re important.  And tell yourself.  Because it’s true. PS. I wrote this last night but I was too mentally exhausted to publish it, and this morning I looked out and saw a mostly full moon and realized that’s probably partially to blame.  It sounds insane and vaguely werewolfy to blame the moon, but I know that weeks with full moons are wors...

Rough Hands & Fine Threads? Some Tips!

Gambar
It’s winter here in Kansas. It’s biting cold out, the heat is on, the air is dry. I don’t have a maid and I haven’t invented a magic sink, so the dishes still need washing every day! My hands just want to be rough and scratchy this time of year. Rough and scratchy hands are a frustrating inconvenience when you’re working with fine embroidery threads – any time of year! You know how it is: you’re stitching along pretty happily with a brand new thread, when disaster strikes! Your thread snags on, of all things, your thumb! That curséd dry scratchy patch on the side of your thumb ! Grrrrr! The plies of the thread bunch up, the fibers get hairy, you have to trim the thread and start anew. I know I’m not the only one with this problem, because inevitably, in the winter, I get a lot of inquiries about how to work with fine embroidery threads when your hands are rough. Over the years, I’ve tried myriad solutions for this problem. Today, I’ll chat about what works for me, and then ask yo...

Look Inside A Run-Down Foreclosure-Turned-Country-Dream Home

Kelly & Her Home When house hunting, one of the most important things to consider is if a house has "good bones," which means it has many of the most desirable aspects that a home can offer (think: natural light, a comfortable layout, etc), even if those things are difficult to see at first. This term is particularly useful when viewing a house that is very old and run-down, needs a lot of work and is outdated. Lucky for Kelly Portnoy of The Good Story, she was able to see past the intense smells, stains and many other issues of one particular house. She says that even though it was unlivable when she first saw it, she and her family loved it and saw the potential it had. After moving into that house in 2012, she has worked hard to transform it into a dream home for her family, and the result is indeed dreamy. Without further ado, here's an intimate look at the beautiful space that Kelly, her husband and three children call home . Tell us how you came to find your hom...
