Whether modern or traditional, they add elegance to a bathroom like nothing else. Though often reserved for bigger baths, freestanding tubs can work in smaller spaces with the right layout, design, and tub choice. (Still, while freestanding tubs are perfectly suited to master baths, they’re not right for all situations. They may be problematic for bathing small children , for example.) A freestanding tub is typically the focal point of the bathroom, so it makes sense to determine its location first and then to lay out the other elements — the shower, vanity, and toilet — around the tub, using them in ways that support the design. There are several things to keep in mind when including a freestanding tub in a bath, starting with the size of the tub. Tub length is best determined by having the bather try out different tubs. Tub-to-Shower Conversion Benefits

Gambar
Is your bathtub the one thing in your house that is getting the least amount of use and soaking up valuable space? Have your children grown up and you no longer need a tub? Tub-to- shower conversion s are a hot trend among today’s homeowners, as the “tub-less” bathroom is showering homes with safety, style and function. Tubs are out According to the 2013 Home Design Trends Survey by The American Institute of Architects, more than 60% of homeowners preferred a stall shower without a tub. Let’s face it: soaking in a soothing hot bubble bath may sound like a great idea, but how many of us really have the time or luxury to indulge ourselves? Tubs are often a necessity for bathing small children , but when they grow up, why would you need it? Shower safety Tub-to- shower conversion s are becoming more popular with empty nesters and seniors as they view walk-in showers as a safer alternative to their bathtubs. Climbing over a bathtub wall can present a safety hazard as we age. Converting y...

Everyday Cheapskate: The wonders of Epsom salt

I can recall vividly — and count on one hand — the migraine headaches I’ve had in my life, all of which were before age 10. Once I turned double digits , I outgrew them ... until a couple of months ago. With no warning at all, there I was back to my 8-year-old self, flat on my back with a raging migraine. Why now, after all these years? In reading up on the latest findings, I discovered how important magnesium is to our overall health. Turns out that 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from magnesium deficiency causing all kinds of health issues, one of them being migraine headaches. And here’s the problem with that: Magnesium supplements are not necessarily the answer because it is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I read how Epsom salt is rich in magnesium, which just happens to be easily absorbed through the skin — as in soaking in it in a nice warm bath . You can be sure Epsom salt soaks are now part of my ro...

Freestanding tubs and bigger showers are changing bathroom design

Bathtubs used to be simple things. They were attached to the wall. There was a shower head at one end. You pulled a curtain to keep water from going where it wasn’t supposed to. But like many other aspects of home decor, tubs and showers have gone uptown. “People want their tubs to be the masterpiece of the bathroom,” said Thomas Phan, principal owner of Lifestyle Fixtures in Huntington Beach. One of the most popular ways to achieve that aura is with a freestanding bathtub, which sits in a prominent place and doesn’t abut any wall. “A freestanding tub sits in the middle of the bathroom,” Phan explained. “It says, ‘Look at me!’” Clearly, you need some space for such a large hunk of plumbing hubris. But there are a variety of freestanding tub sizes now, so even smaller bathrooms can accommodate the look. There are some challenges, Phan warned. “If you install one in a downstairs bathroom that’s on a concrete pad, that’s a little more work. You have to jackhammer through the cement flo...

Chapped Hands | Prevention

MORE: 9 Bad Habits That Make Your Winter Skin So Much Worse Bolster Your Barrier The skin on the hands acts like a barrier to keep moisture in, says Monica Halem, MD. If this barrier is disrupted by extreme weather conditions , sun exposure, dry air, or certain disease processes, the result can be very dry, itchy, red, cracked, and sore hands. To combat this, reestablish the skin barrier on your hands. “The skin barrier is made of three key elements—ceremide, cholesterol, and triglyceride,” Halem says. There are several creams and lotions on the market that contain all three ingredients; check the label to make sure all three are listed. “And keep in mind that a cream (oil-water mix) is much richer than a lotion (water-oil mix), and better to use for dry hands,” she says. Don't Go Near The Water Although you were probably taught to wash your hands often throughout the day, if you have chapped hands, water is not your friend. In fact, water is the worst influence for chapped hands....
