Mrs Utley’s extension has meant weeks of misery

Gambar
The secret of a long-lasting marriage? Never tell your wife: 'I told you so.' For that reason, I will not remind Mrs U how I warned her months ago that her elaborate home-improvement plans would subject us to weeks of out-and-out misery. Sure enough, the work of enlarging the kitchen and converting the smallest bedroom upstairs into a shower-room still grinds on, more than eight weeks into a project that was meant to take six. I will not remind Mrs U how I warned that her elaborate home-improvement plans would subject us to weeks of out-and-out misery As I write, the house is still barely habitable, with furniture, pots and pans stacked up in the living room, dust everywhere, nowhere to sit in comfort and hardly a moment's peace — for us, or our long-suffering neighbours — from banging, clanking, drilling and problems, problems, problems. Mind you, I'm not blaming the builders, plumbers, tilers, decorators and electricians who've taken the place over since the midd...

How to get away with murder in small-town India

Gambar
On my last week in India, I went to say goodbye to Jahiruddin Mewati, the chief of a small village where I had made a dozen or so reporting trips. Jahiruddin and I were not precisely friends, but we had spent many hours talking over the years, mostly about local politics. I found him entirely without scruples but candid. He suspected my motives but found me entertaining, in the way that a talking dog might be entertaining, without regard for the particulars of what I said. Jahiruddin, though uneducated, was an adept politician, fresh from winning a hard- fought local election . During our conversations, he would often break into rousing, patriotic speeches about truth and justice, thumping the plastic table in emphasis and making it jump. The effect was somewhat tarnished by his Tourette’s syndrome, which caused him to interject the word “penis” at regular intervals. He was frank about the dirty aspects of his job. He occupied a post reserved for women from lower castes, but no one pre...

The following is from Adam O'Riordan’s short story collection , The Burning Ground. The Burning Ground is a collection of eight stories about men haunted by their past: from a painter tormented by memories of a lover to a father trying to rekindle a relationship with his son. Adam O’Riordan’s poetry collection In the Flesh won the Somerset Maugham Award , awarded to the best writer under the age of 35. He is an academic director at Manchester Metropolitan University . Alannah would always come at two o’clock as she had on her first visit. But they never talked about how they might exist outside of the confines of the studio. Then at Easter a fortnight passed without her visiting. He had delayed his own trip to see his sister in Harrogate. By the third week, when two o’clock came he was pacing the studio, snapping the slats in the battered brushed-metal blind, peering down on to the parked cars on the street below. He had first met Alannah and her husband at the same party. He had...

AARON BROWN, CNN ANCHOR: Good evening again. I'm Aaron Brown. Those of you who get the daily e-mail know I seem to be in a bit of a mood today. I hate that. It's just something about the week. The Middle East is always a tough one. The sides are so passionate and so certain. And this was a difficult week there. But it was more than that. Too many kids are dying. And while I know the statistics and I believe them, our kids are in no greater danger now, the fact is that too many, even if too many is just the average number, are dying. There was Samantha Runnion and today, this child in Missouri, Casey Williamson. There's a story I did in the newsbreak tonight about a kid in Florida who was swimming in a lake and contracted a deadly disease. And then, not far away in another lake, another kid, a different d...
